During the latter part of 1933 Willy Messerschmitt and a team of designers at Bayerische Flugzeug-werke AC began work on a four-seat, high-performance sports monoplane of lightweight metal construction with such relative novelties as a retract¬able undercarriage, wing slots, wing flaps and an enclosed cabin. The result was the Bf 108, which itself deserves the accolade 'classic'; many examples still fly to this day. The design incorporated several features that remained unique for many years and adopted a general layout that has been followed in light aircraft design for decades. The aircraft was a complete success and many of the innovations intro¬duced with the type were to be carried on to the next project.

A pictorial history of the war in the air of 1914-18, this book covers the war from the first tentative acts of aggression in the air in 1914 to the employment of massive air power by the war's end. Subjects covered include: the early attempts to arm aircraft, the Zeppelin raids, the appearance of fighter "aces", the early employment of carrier-based aircraft, the development of the heavy bomber and of night flying, the formation of the United States Air Service (USAS), and the creation of the Royal Air Force - the world's first independent air arm - in 1918. Also presented are the exploits of American volunteer pilots flying with the legendary Lafayette Escadrille. The book does not restrict its scope to the Western Front; also covered are air operations in the Middle East and Central Europe, as well as the air attacks on British and German towns and cities.

The language of the note was stiff. Written in Tokyo at the end of November, 1944, and then handed over to the Ministerio De Asuntos Exteriores in Madrid by the Japanese government's represen-tative on 2 December, it was finally delivered by the Spanish Embassy to the United States Depart¬ment of State in Washington, D.C., on 4 Decem¬ber. As one of the rare yet rational diplomatic notesexchanged between the two primary antagonists of the Pacific War, it revealed far more about the desperate defense preparations made by Japan in its last year of war than its writers would have wished to convey.

The lineage of the Marlin can be traced back to the PBM-4 Mariner design proposal of 1941. The PBM-1/2, ordered in 1937, was fitted with Wright Aeronautical Company (WAC) 1,600 HP R-2600-6 engines. Follow-on PBM-3, -3C, -3R and -3S models were equipped with WAC 1,700 HP R-2600-12 engines. The final version of the series, the PBM -3D, had WAC 1,900 HP R-2600-22 engines. Even with the 1,900 HP engines, the PBM-3 series Mariner was seriously under-pow¬ered, with poor take-off, climb and single-engine performance.

ALTHOUGH the Allied Nations have been at war with Japan in the Pacific and the Far East since 1941, and a state of war has existed between China and Japan since the Japanese attack in Manchuria in 1931, little genuine interest has been taken in this theatre of war, and for the most part only utterances of ill-founded statements have been made to the effect that the Japanese are a race of copyists and that "... we will soon knock hell out of them." With this lack of general interest it is perhaps not surprising that attempts to teach recognition of Japanese aircraft have proved extremely difficult.
