Architecture Design Notebook focuses on the process of design as pragmatic and non-theoretical. Dealing systematically with the core design curriculum, it clearly demonstrates the skills required for designing at undergraduate level. Providing students with fundamental maxims of design, and a framework within which they can approach their work, this book supports undergraduates as they learn to produce solutions to design challenges. This vital design companion underpins the cornerstone of an architectural undergraduates’ studies – studio design projects. With over 100 sketches included, the book inspires student’s design ideas. This updated edition includes new sections on green architecture, urban space typology, and the virtual building. A. Peter Fawcett is an architect and critic who combines teaching with sporadic practice; he is currently Professor Emeritus of Architecture at the University of Nottingham and visiting Professor at the University of Lincoln. In recent years his work has been placed in architectural competitions and has been hung at the Royal Academy and Royal Ulster Academy.

Architectural Structures provides the critical tools and know-how to design and build structures that will withstand wind, earthquakes, and other forces. This major survey of structural design is a useful guide to the fundamentals of establishing the structural concept for a building and dealing with structural issues.
Using diagrams, models, computer simulations, case studies, and exercises, Architectural Structures provides a comprehensive narrative that makes selecting and giving shape to structures and structural elements understandable. In addition to developing the necessary vocabulary to effectively work with structural engineers, it helps readers gain a common-sense understanding of principles and issues, the complexities of the design process, and useful analytic methods. This exceptional volume also features:
* Diagrams, drawings, and photographs supporting complex concepts * Helpful case studies illustrating structural behavior and the design of structural systems * Information on cost estimation and other practical issues * Real-world problems and solutions based on actual building structures

The planners cannot go out today from a tabula rasa situation anymore. Environmental and sustainability issues have already formed the public idea that a 'greenbelt' of our cities is necessary, a kind of fortification leading to intensive development in towns inside a clearly delimited area within the surrounding nature. Since building on the periphery is limited, and the existing built substance has a certain cultural, architectural or at least environmental value, upgrading of existing buildings gains more and more ground from the design of new buildings. Masonry has been already recognised as construction material par excellence for historic structures. Reinforced concrete has not been yet. The reason for this may lay in the fact that concrete has not been employed for long, thus buildings with concrete structure are generally regarded as not old enoughto be considered historical. But the International Council on Monuments and Sites at a joined seminar with UNESCO and the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property in 1995 in Helsinki deemed the systematic documentation of the 20th century heritage, when these buildings were raised. The book includes chapters on these components of the building stock which have not been covered by previous studies, with architectural or cultural value. Special attention was given to a recommendation of the ICOMOS seminar in Helsinki, which concerns encouraging research programmes on specific problems concerning techniques and materials in restoration work, taking into consideration their aesthetic qualities. ICOMOS members are authoring

Unique, cutting-edge material on structural dynamics and natural forces for offshore structures Using the latest advances in theory and practice, Dynamics of Offshore Structures, Second Edition is extensively revised to cover all aspects of the physical forces, structural modeling, and mathematical methods necessary to effectively analyze the dynamic behavior of offshore structures. Both closed-form solutions and the Mathematica(r) software package are used in many of the up-to-date example problems to compute the deterministic and stochastic structural responses for such offshore structures as buoys; moored ships; and fixed-bottom, cable-stayed, and gravity-type platforms.
Throughout the book, consideration is given to the many assumptions involved in formulating a structural model and to the natural forces encountered in the offshore environment. These analyses focus on plane motions of elastic structures with linear and nonlinear restraints, as well as motions induced by the forces of currents, winds, earthquakes, and waves, including the latest theories and information on wave mechanics. Topics addressed include multidegree of freedom linear structures, continuous system analysis (including the motion of cables and pipelines), submerged pile design, structural modal damping, fluid-structure-soil interactions, and single degree of freedom structural models that, together with plane wave loading theories, lead to deterministic or time history predictions of structural responses. These analyses are extended to statistical descriptions of both wave loading and structural motion.
Dynamics of Offshore Structures, Second Edition is a valuable text for students in civil and mechanical engineering progr

Many anthologies on the city exist, but only a few contain both cutting-edge theoretical essays and rich empirical studies. The latter focus on cities outside the Western urban canon and will make Understanding the City even more attractive to urban scholars.

Kisho Kurokawa has always aimed to create an architecture of, what he calls, 'the age of life' principle, which employs the concepts and vocabularies of life systems, biology and ecology. Simultaneously, his intention when designing a structure is to address how cultural identity can be incorporated into contemporary architecture so that people everywhere will understand it. These two demanding challenges do indeed breathe life and bring meaning to his varied and distinctive portfolio of work, a selection of which is featured in this book.
