Kojin Karatani, Japan's leading literary critic, is perhaps best known for his imaginative readings of Shakespeare, Soseki, Marx, Wittgenstein, and most recently Kant. His works, of which Origins of Modern Japanese Literature is the only one previously translated into English, are the generic equivalent to what in America is called theory. Karatani's writings are important not only for the insights they offer on the various topics under discussion, but also as an example of a distinctly non-Western critical intervention.
In Architecture as Metaphor, Karatani detects a recurrent will to architecture that he argues is the foundation of all Western thinking, traversing architecture, philosophy, literature, linguistics, city planning, anthropology, political economics, psychoanalysis, and mathematics. In the three parts of the book, he analyzes the complex bonds between construction and deconstruction, thereby pointing to an alternative model of secular criticism, but in the domain of philosophy rather than literary or cultural criticism.

The first in Reaktion's new Objekt series, Factory examines the cultural importance of the factory in its many manifestations: as an icon of the industrial age; as innovator, as inno-vation and as laboratory, and shows more than 100 intriguing visual examples. Whether discussing the utopian schemes of Robert Owen or Claude Ledoux, the cathedrals of industry of Albert Kahn and Frank Lloyd Wright, or the post-industrial revivals of former factories such as Renzo Piano's reconstruction of the Fiat Lingotto factory in Turin, this thematic account sheds a fascinating new light on the cultural connotations of these great modern monoliths.

What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterionimageabilityand shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.

World architecture as a subject of comparative study is not new. In the first half of the 19th century, western and non-western 'high cultures' were seen as more or less equal, while their forms were compared with each other without significant attention to content, meaning or context. However, with the intensification and institutionalization of the colonisation of the non-western world, the urge developed to see western ethics and aesthetics as superior. Function came to be seen as the only determinant of form, and the contemporary array of supposedly functionally determined building forms in the west came to be established as the inevitably perfect result of an assumed evolutionary development. That one and the same function had undeniably led to diverging forms in different world regions was explained from the distribution over diverging geographical contexts in the course of history. Within these contexts, non-explicated forces would have repeatedly transported their absolute, regional characteristics onto any new building. The empirical field, however, shows that the ever-present dynamics in the combination of form, content and function is not merely steered by regional impulses but often also by non-regional representational needs. Therefore, in this book every part of the built environment, whether western or non-western, is seen as a representation of a certain reality. Because form and content are inextricably connected, every architectural creation should be seen as a new, meaningful combination, in the very specific context of a concrete commission of architectural elements that were already there. This paradigm proves to be an outstanding basis for the comparison of apparently incomparable objects like churches, mosques, Sufi building schemes, multi-ethnic neighbourhoods and Chinese building prescriptions, each of which seems to explicitly represent a new boundary without having felt too conscribed by earlier

In this sweeping tour of New Jersey's burial sites from the seventeenth century through the dawn of the twenty-first, readers will discover how headstones are much more than place markers for the deceased. From the earliest memorials that were once used by Native Americans, to some of the elaborate structures of the present day, historians Richard F. Veit and Mark Nonestied use grave markers to tell an off-beat account of New Jersey's history that is both fascinating and unique. In detailed descriptions, the authors explain what cemeteries and their gravemarkers say about different individuals and the communities in which they lived.

This study investigates the sudden proliferation of mausolea in Iran and Central Asia in the tenth and eleventh centuries and how their patrons, secular rulers of Iranian descent, drew on the pre-Islamic past in new ways specific to each region. Mausolea constructed in the tenth and eleventh centuries have a wide geographical spread across modem Iran and the ex-Soviet Central Asian republics. However, the monuments take two different forms: the tomb tower and the domed square. There are formal and functional differences and a different geographical distribution, with the earliest tomb towers concentrated in the inaccessible Alborz Mountains in northern Iran. This remote region had a very different historical trajectory from that of Central Asia, where the earliest extant domed square mausolea are located. Historians of architecture have often noted that certain features seen in these mausolea have some vague connection with the pre-Islamic past, but this connection has never been precisely defined or explained; I argue that the cultural dynamics which resulted in particular architectural forms were very different in these two regions: pre-Islamic Iranian traditions were selectively continued in the Caspian region of northern Iran, whereas other elements of the Iranian past were consciously revived in Central Asia. Two of the mausolea that I analyze, the Samanid mausoleum and the Gunbad-i Qabus, are well-known monuments which appear in virtually every survey of Islamic art, whereas most of the others are almost completely unknown.

To continue developing existing building types in an intelligent way is a crucial task in the field of residential building. A deeper understanding of the underlying types is indispensable for the success of the individual design, as well as for ensuring that tried and tested structures can be utilized, repeated, and varied in a wide variety of situations.
For this typology of residential buildings, the authors have developed systematic new presentations of the most innovative types. Each individual volume lays out the possibilities for using and transforming a particular form of residential structure.

The City Rehearsed offers an entirely new perspective on printed architecture in early modern Europe through the lens of Hans Vredeman de Vries. It probes the geographical encounters of dozens of engravings with contemporary texts on architecture, theatre, urbanism, art collecting, even ethnography.
The Netherlandish polymath Hans Vredeman de Vries (1526-1609) devoted his entire career to the production of imaginary architecture. Painter, architect, rhetorician, perspective theorist, festival designer, and draughtsman, Vredeman was active in Antwerp, Amsterdam, and Prague, where he designed a mysterious body of architectural prints, works which by the seventeenth century had influenced buildings from Tallinn to Peru. Including Scenographiae (1560), and Perspective (1604-5), Vredemans strange publications were among the most widely-distributed Renaissance books on building and vision, shipped to England, Spain and even Mexico by 1600
