Field research for my earlier book on Chinese traditional rural architecture took me throughout the country, confirming the rich vitality of vernacular or folk traditions. These traditions, which coexist under the capacious umbrella of China's architecture, led me in search of an area to carry out an intensive survey of one representative of China's vernacular architecture. Over and over since 1977, I have been drawn back to the province of Zhejiang, a beautiful and diverse area with distinct and varied traditions that diverge from the better known northern patterns and that are transitional to those found in the southeastern coastal region of the country. Personal contacts and multiple visits to the province led to field work concerning house form and culture there in 1987 and 1988.

n The Destruction of Memory, Robert Bevan examines the effects of conflict on architecture through a wide range of examples. These include the razing of Aztec cities by Cortez, the clashes between Islam and Hinduism in India, the Holocaust, the Chinese destruction of Tibetan Lhasa and the attack on the World Trade Center in New York. He argues that these incidents were not mere collateral damage, as some might claim: they were deliberate acts of destruction, an attack not only on the architecture, but also on the cultural memory of a nation. Robert Bevan is former editor of the British periodical Building Design and writes regularly on architectural, design and housing issues for national newspapers in the U.K.

Examining the proliferation of reinforced-concrete construction in the United States after 1900, historian Amy E. Slaton considers how scientific approaches and occupations displaced traditionally skilled labor. The technology of concrete buildings -- little studied by historians of engineering, architecture, or industry -- offers a remarkable case study in the modernization of American production.
The use of concrete brought to construction the new procedures and priorities of mass production. These included a comprehensive application of science to commercial enterprise and vast redistributions of skills, opportunities, credit, and risk in the workplace. Reinforced concrete also changed the American landscape as building buyers embraced the architectural uniformity and simplicity to which the technology was best suited.

The dynamics of the architectural environment is a key aspect of good design, yet poorly understood. Environmental variety is a design characteristic closely related to our experience of architecture an architecture of the senses. Each chapter demonstrates how an understanding of a particular context or environmental characteristic in dynamic terms informs design. The book is an antidote to the misconceptions of optimum environmental performance, embracing instead the richness of environmental variety.

Japanese architecture is one of the most inspired manifestations of Japanese civilizations. Arguing that architectural styles are more than just symbols of the powers that created them, William Coaldrake explores the symbiotic relationship between architecture and authority throughout Japanese history. Exploring key structures and how they have been used as active conveyors of power, Coaldrake relates buildings to the political ambitions and religious beliefs of the major historical eras in Japan.
