One of the most decisive months of World War II was the 30 days between 25 July and 25 August 1944. After the success of the D-Day landings, the Allied forces found themselves bogged down in a bloody stalemate in Normandy. On 25 July General Bradley launched Operation Cobra to break the deadlock. US forces punched a hole in the German frontline and began a spectacular advance. As Patton’s Third Army poured into Brittany and raced south to the Loire, the German army was threatened with encirclement. By the end of August German forces in Normandy were utterly destroyed, and the remaining German units in central and southern France were in headlong retreat to the German frontier. In this title Steve Zaloga explains how the breakout from Normandy came about. |

This book covers the high command, the developments in unit organisation, the campaigns and the uniforms and equipment of the German Army in the last two years of the war in North-West Europe and Italy. Despite the huge pressure of fighting on three fronts, ever-worsening shortages of manpower and equipment, and Allied command of the skies, Germany's decimated divisions fought on with impressive skill and determination. This period also saw a fascinating mixture of obsolescent, newly designed, and field-made combat clothing which gave the German soldier a radically different appearance from his predecessor of just five years before. Men-at-Arms 311, 316, 326, 330 and 336 are also available in a single volume special edition titled ‘German Army in World War II’. |

One of the least-published but most interesting campaigns of the Great War was that fought in East Africa by forces of colonial troops - British Empire, German, Belgian and Portuguese. Short of resources due to the priority given to other fronts, European, African and Indian soldiers recorded epics of endurance as they hunted the outnumbered but brilliantly led German colonial forces across a vast, disease-ridden wilderness. The achievements of the German commander Paul von Lettow Vorbeck - the last German commander in the field to lay down his arms in 1918 - brought him fame and respect comparable to those won by Rommel in World War II. The events and the forces are described here in concise detail, and illustrated with rare photographs and striking colour plates. |

Over the centuries of their existence the Scottish regiments of the British Army have gained a reputation in war that is the envy of all and which can be matched, or surpassed, by very few. The very description 'Scottish soldier' conjures up images ranging from the 'thin red streak tipped with a line of steel' of the 93rd Highlanders at Balaclava, and the charge of the Scots greys at Waterloo, to the more recent deeds of Scottish regiments in the Falkland Islands and the Persian Gulf. Mike Chappell chronicles the remarkable history of the Scottish units which fought in the two world wars. |

The army of Charlemagne and his successors enabled the western Franks to recreate what contemporaries regarded as a 'reborn' western Roman empire. Frankish society was well prepared for war, with outstanding communications drawing together the disparate regions of a large empire. The role of mounted troops, the essential striking force of the Frankish army, is explored here. Alongside it was the impact that new technology, such as stirrups, had on warfare in this period. Illuminating a much-neglected area of history, this book shows how the role of cavalry grew in prestige, as the Carolingian armoured horseman gave way to the knight of the early 10th century. |

Following the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre where terrorists of 'Black September' murdered 11 Israeli athletes, the Israeli defense and intelligence apparatus became preoccupied with avenging this atrocity. Israel's revenge, when it came, was spectacular. An audacious raid marked the culmination of an 18-month covert and overt campaign against 'Black September', which achieved that organisation's destruction. But the 18-month effort had severely drained Israeli intelligence resources. Since the 1967 Six Day War, Israeli military intelligence had greatly underestimated their Arab adversaries. The Israelis had become over-confident; and they were about to pay dearly for their errors, on the holiest day in the Jewish year, 'Yom Kippur'. |
