As well as being a political center, the Agora was the focus of a noisy and varied commercial life. This booklet illustrates the archaeological, documentary, and pictorial evidence for such diverse trades as shoe-making, fishmongering, weaving, and the manufacture of luxury goods and perfumes. Shopping was just one aspect of this public space: ancient Athenians would also have received medical treatment, been married and buried, made sacrifices, and received education in the Agora. The material remains from all of these activities are also discussed. Vivid illustrations and useful resources, such as a table of prices and coinage, bring the bustling marketplace to life.

Long ago when people still lived in caves-perhaps at the same time when they developed habits that were different from those of other animals- humans began to practice ecology. They became keen observers of nature through such basic and instinctive actions as tracking both large wild animals and small prey, discerning edible plants from poisonous ones, and noting the time of year when different plants could be gathered. From necessity and inherent curiosity, humans began to learn about the relationships between living things and the environment. As the field of ecology grew, its focus went beyond the simple cataloging of living things in the world. Ecologists also became interested in understanding how living things function and how they interrelate with one another and with the environment-to explain that peculiar element that makes the Earth unique: life. We will begin by learning what ecology is and what it is not. (At times the word has been used incorrectly as a synonym for environmental protection.) Later, we will look at how living things are classified, before moving into the study of the environments in which they live: the land, water, and air. |

Buenos Aires has long been known as one of the world's most beautiful cities, but in the past it was too expensive for many South American tourists. With the devaluation of the Argentine currency following the country's 2001 financial crisis, suddenly affordable prices and a blossoming of local culture has made the city one of the world's most popular and vibrant cities. Frommer's Buenos Aires Day by Day will guide readers through this new Buenos Aires, quickly and with an insider's knowledge of the one-of-a-kind experiences that lurk in the city's inviting neighborhoods. The book will be filled with tips and itinerary suggestions, like walking tours of historic San Telmo, the best places for tango lessons, and where to uncover the flourishing Argentine cuisine and fashions. With hundreds of original color photos, dozens of annotated maps, thematic tours for every taste and star-rated advice on where to eat, stay, shop, and have fun, this book is the perfect accompaniment to any visit to the city.

Геохимик и минералог А. Е.

Preserved beneath the surface of the Agora are thousands of terracotta pipes, stone drainage channels, and lead pressure lines. These form a complex chain of waterworks, constructed and repaired over many different periods. This book discusses the complex engineering that channeled fresh water into the Agora and disposed of waste water, and shows some of the ornate wells and fountain houses where ancient Athenians gathered to drink and bathe.

Due to their rare combination of high chemical stability, exceptional optical and electrical properties, high surface-to-volume ratio, and high aspect ratio, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have made an enormous impact on materials science, molecular biology, biomedicine, and bioanalytical chemistry. Carbon Nanotubes: Methods and Protocols provides reliable, consistent protocols on the application of CNTs in molecular biology-related fields. These are of vital importance, as the commercially available CNTs differ in purity, agglomeration state, as well as length and diameter distribution, all of which have a profound influence on the dispersability and surface properties of the tubes. The volume contains detailed sections on functionalization, toxicity, trafficking, scaffolds, and biosensors, provided by expert researchers from various fields. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Carbon Nanotubes: Methods and Protocols serves to contribute to the achievement of common standards and helps researchers to avoid discrepancies in future biology-related CNT studies. |

Implant Laboratory Procedures: A Step-By-Step Guide provides its readers with a systematic and practical approach to the common dental laboratory procedures associated with implant restorative dentistry. Written with laboratory technicians and restorative dentists in mind, the book is organized by case type, taking common case scenarios and devoting a separate chapter to each one in turn, demonstrating each step of the laboratory procedure required for the implant restoration. Complications associated with the various prosthetic procedures are also included in each chapter and work orders are shown for each and every step. Cases are illustrated with products from various implant companies, but predominantly feature products from Biomet 3i. Implant Laboratory Procedures: A Step–By–Step Guide offers a useful, pragmatic, and helpful approach to the laboratory aspects of implant dentistry. Focusing on step–by–step explanations of procedures, it also contains a wealth of other useful information, such as terminology and background of the modality. Highly illustrated with clinical and laboratory photographs and diagrams, it will provide dental technicians with a comprehensive guide to implant dentistry, and also allow both restorative dentists and implant surgeons to gain additional insights into dental laboratory procedures. |
