Fred Funcken et son épouse Liliane (nés respectivement en 1921 et 1927), auteurs belges de bandes dessinées et illustrateurs, se sont lancés au cours des années 1960 dans la publication d'une série d'ouvrages d'uniformologie et, plus généralement, d'histoire militaire. Les 17 volumes originaux de leurs aeuvres sont encore aujourd'hui l'objet de l'adulation d'admirateurs passionnés que l'on pourrait qualifier, en employant le vocabulaire d'aujourd'hui, de véritables « geeks ». Leurs livres sont construits sur un modèle très simple : un page de texte qui alterne avec une planche d'illustrations. Les deux volumes portant sur « Le costume, l'armure et les armes au temps de la chevalerie » sont aujourd'hui parmi les plus rares. Ils sont particulièrement réussis en s'attachant en détails à l'équipement des guerriers de l'époque tout en offrant des récits vivants et évocateurs sur les grandes batailles ou les grands sièges du Moyen Âge. Dans le Tome II qui porte sur le siècle de la renaissance on peu admirer de nombreuses planches sur les fabuleuses armures, très travaillées, du XVIe siècle, voir en image l'arrivée des armes à feu l'artillerie dans la bataille ou s'étonner devant les tenues colorées des lansquenets. On relèvera aussi une sixième partie, sur les Slaves et Orientaux, illustrée de dessins magnifiques sur un univers qui nous est moins connu. Globalement très bien documentés, les travaux et les illustrations des Funcken sont d'une excellente qualité et propre à faire rêver le lecteur sur l'histoire avec un grand H.

Auflage der »Schiffe und Boote der deutschen Kriegsmarine und Luftwaffe 1939-1945 und ihr Verbleib« (KM-Verbleib) entstand Nachfrage nach einer gleichartigen Bearbeitung der Kaiserlichen Flotte 1914-1918. Sie wird hier nun vorgelegt und soll drei Aufgaben erfüllen: - Sie soll dem Neubeginnenden und dem Fernerstehenden eine handliche, preiswerte Übersicht über die wichtigsten Daten dieser Flotte in geraffter Form geben. - Sie soll den Vergleich der deutschen Flotten beider Weltkriege ermöglichen. Deshalb wurde bewußt gleiche Gliederung und gleicher Aufbau gewählt, bis hin zur Benutzung der gleichen Abkürzungen, soweit dies möglich war. - Für den Fachkenner werden Ergebnisse der Forschung der letzten Jahre geboten, die über die Daten in »Die deutschen Kriegsschiffe 1815-1945« (DDK) hinausgehen, sie ergänzen oder korrigieren. Zu diesen neuen Ergebnissen zählen auch die neuen Skizzen der großen Einheiten, die W. Bohlayer (Bo) und F. Mrva (Mrv) auf Grund des endlich wieder verfügbaren Planmaterials des Kaiserlichen Konstruktions-Departements fertigen konnten. Eine vollständige Auswertung dieser Unterlagen wird die derzeit laufende Neubearbeitung des Bd. 1/DDK bieten. Außerdem enthält der Kaiserliche Verbleib Skizzen von E. Gröner (Grö), P. Mickel (Mi) und E. Rössler (Rö). Ihnen sei herzlich für ihre Arbeit gedankt, ebenso den Mitarbeitern im »Arbeitskreis Erich Gröner«, die sich einzelner Fragen annahmen: N. Kelling (Illustrationen), Dr. G. Meyer (Auswertung RWS-Akten). Dr. A. Niestie (Uboot-Verbleibe), E. Rössler (Uboot-Technik) und D. Thomaier (strittige Panzerungsfragen). Ganz besonderer Dank gilt Herrn Döringhoff im Bundesarchiv/Militärarchiv, dessen Hilfe bei der Klärung offener Fragen wieder sehr wertvoll war. Leider ist er vor dem Ende des Jahres 2002 in den Ruhestand gegangen, ohne daß ein fachkundiger Nachfolger benannt wurde, dessen Beratung jedoch auch für ständige Benutzer des BA/MA unverzichtbar ist. Wir werden Herrn Döringhoff in Zukunft sehr vermissen. Es bleibt zu hoffen, daß sich auch der »Kaiserliche Verbleib« als ebenso nützlich und brauchbar herausstellen wird, wie der »KM-Verbleib« in den vergangenen fünfzig Jahren.

On 2 November 1914, obscured by the greater events in Europe, a British convoy of a light cruiser and twelve merchantmen was lying off the German East African port of Tanga, preparatory to the landing of two brigades of the Indian army. It started the main phase of the East African campaign which lasted until after the Armistice in November 1918. The battle of Tanga was the bloody beginning of a long and bitterly fought campaign in tropical Africa conceived as part of a wider plan to conquer Germany's East African empire and ensure British maritime superiority in the Indian Ocean. The ensuing battle proved to be a fiasco for the British, and highlighted the lack of co-ordination between Britain's wartime ministries and the unreadiness of the Indian Army.

In the long and proud history of flight research at what is now called the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, the D-558 project holds a special place as being one of the earliest and most productive flight research efforts conducted here. Data from the D-558 and the early X-planes enabled researchers at what became NASA’s Langley Research Center to correlate and correct test results from wind tunnels with actual flight values. Then, the combined results of flight and wind-tunnel testing enabled the U.S. aeronautical community to solve many of the problems that occur in the transonic speed range (about 0.8 to 1.2 times the speed of sound), such as pitchup, buffeting, and other instabilities. This enabled reliable and routine flight of such aircraft as the century series of fighters (F-100, F-102, F-104, etc.) as well as all commercial transport aircraft from the mid-1950s to the present.
