Der Leser der Bildbände der WAFFEN-ARSENAL-Reihe, gewohnt, Berichte über Militärflugzeuge in dieser Reihe zu sehen, wird sich erstaunt fragen, wie das Flugschiff Do X in diese Reihe hineinkommt. Der Grund liegt darin, daß dieses seiner Zeit weit vorausgeeilte Fluggerät tatsächlich als Militärflugzeug konzipiert und später auch als solches verwendet wurde. Im Kriegsverbrecher-Prozeß in Nürnberg wurde unter anderem eine sogenannte "Geheime Dienstschrift Nr. 15", herausgegeben vom Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine 1937, vorgelegt. Auf Seite 587 des Bandes XXXIV der Nürnberger Prozeßakten, die die erwähnte Dienstschrift behandelt, wird geschildert, daß Dornier 1927 im Auftrage der Reichsmarine das Großflugboot Do X, das in der Dornier-filiale Altenrhein gebaut wurde, entwickelt habe. Es heißt dann: "Die Do X war als seefähiges Versuchsboot mit größten Ausmaßen für die Verwendung als Fernaufklärer, Minenleger und Torpedoflugzeug gedacht". Es wird dann zwar weiter bemerkt, daß die tatsächliche Verwendbarkeit im Seeflugdienst der Marine gering war; die Tatsache bleibt aber bestehen, daß die Do X als Militärflugzeug geplant war, und die 1925 entstandenen 10- und 12-motorigen Entwürfe nichts mit der Do X zu tun hatten. |

In the armies of the Napoleonic era, the infantry formed the most numerous, and arguably the most important, of all the 'arms'. But the winning of the battle is in the detail - the proper management of those arms. In this book, companion to the similar work on cavalry, the author looks toward what actually happened in the battles of the period, rather than what should have occurred, according to the regulations.
