Although P-39s were one of the most brilliantly designed and engineered fighters of WWII they became one of the most controversial and disappointing American aircraft of that era. It was conceived as a fast interceptor designed around a hard-hitting 37mm cannon that fired explosive shells ensuring the destruction of any enemy aircraft. But after promising flight tests by the XP-39 the US Army Air Corps mandated removing the turbo-supercharger. This short-sighted and ill-advised decision by leaders schooled and experienced only in ground warfare meant that the high altitude performance of the aircraft suffered considerably. But the aircraft's users particularly the RAF blamed Bell Aircraft for the substandard high altitude performance. Airacobras were not held in high favor by most pilots who flew it. Vintage and contemporary b&w and color photographs supply general and close-up images of each model. Don Greer supplies two pages of color profiles. As always, Kinzey's text is crisp, authoritative and informative. Realizing that previous B-25 illustrations were sometimes incorrect, Kinzey had Lloyd S. Jones create three-views that are the most accurate drawings of the Mitchell yet seen. |

Toshikazu Kawasaki has a very geometrical and precise style of folding, yet his models have a life of their own. There are plenty of flowers here, mostly modular, and some interesting animals. 2 of Kawasaki's famous roses are re-diagrammed with very clear steps. The book is designed as a course, with each chapter introducing a certain technique, and then going on to incorporate it in some models. The diagrams are accompanied in some of the steps with small B&W photographs, to make the steps clearer. Each model has 2 indicated recommended starting paper sizes - one is for practice, and one for display. |

The P-38 Lightning represented a dramatic leap forward for fighter planes of its time. It was faster, bigger, and more heavily armed compared to other fighters, and easily recognizable with its distinctive twin tail booms. Part 1 covers the experimental models through the P-38H, along with a discussion of the related reconnaissance versions of the plane. FEATURES: Filled with specifications, facts, and pictures. This is a very interesting book that, by putting the Info w/Pictures, is Educational as well. Clarifies features found on some models but not on others. Lots of close-up and detailed pictures, perfect for scale modelers. Includes a section on the "Glacier Girl" restoration project (A P-38 rescued from its ice-covered Arctic crash site). Includes reviews of plastic scale models of the P-38. |
