Bob Kowalski continues the saga of the bomber Torpedo (BT) program and the similar Scout Bomber (SB) program with the obscure story of the Douglas XSB2D-1 and BTD-1 "Destroyer". The United States was still at peace when the Navy issued a requirement for a design to serve with the fleet as both a successor to the SBD, which would be nearing obsolescence, and as a possible replacement for the SB2C, which was undergoing what can charitably be called a prolonged proportional development period. To meet this requirement, two prototypes of the SXB2D-1 were ordered by the Navy on 30 June 1941.

The text for this book was originally written by Gerry Markgraf for the Fall 1977 issue of the American Aviation Historical Society Journal Vol. 22 No. 3. The story is just as valid today as when it was written, and is used as the basis for this book. The story was originally called "Skyshark, Son of Spad", hence the "Son of Spad" title at the top of this page. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, the Navy would try just about anything to increase the performance and capability of its aircraft. They would test the Hi-Bred Allison XT-40 not only in the A2D, but in the XA2J-1 Super Savage (see Naval Fighters #22), the vertical takeoff XFY-1 (see Naval Fighters #27) and XFV-1 (see Naval Fighters #32) and the XP5Y-1/R3Y-1/2 Tradewind flying boats (see Naval Fighters # 34). Unfortunately none of these programs were successful save the XP5Y-1/R3Y-1/2, which was eventually terminated by engine/gear box problems. Even though all of the XT-40 programs eventualy ended in cancellation, the lessons learned by Allison allowed them to build the reliable powerplants still being used on Grumman E-2/C-2 and Lockheed P-3 and C-130 aircraft.

The "Flying Pancake", "Flying Flapjack", "Flying Saucer", and "Zimmer's Skimmer" were all names used to describe Charles H. Zimmerman's unorthodox V-173 and XF5U-1 aircraft. Two other descriptions: the world's fastest and slowest-flying airplane and the world's first vertical takeoff and landing airplane, might have been used to describe the XF5U1 that was built but never flown. Zimmerman's brainchild was designed to do just that, but was never given the chance.

A silver streak flashes over the Air Force Base at Muroc, California. The slim, shark-bellied McDonnell XF-88 is unveiled as another advance in America's air mastery. The twin-jet penetration fighter is capable of operating deep inside enemy territory--acting as an escort for heavy bombers or serving as a dual purpose fighter-bomber. In a ship designed to fly at such high speeds, all equipment must be engineered to perform faultlessly -- must be designed to fit a minimum space envelope -- must be as light in weight as possible, consistent with strength.

The XB-51 has a special glamour among the many projects that were born in the early 50s, and never came to fruition. With its spectacular looks, its variable incidence wing, and its bristling performance on 3 engines, the XB-51 could have been a star of the late 50s and the 60s. Politics, and the competition from a very able opponent, the EE Canberra, decided otherwise. This book is an excellent pictorial tribute to this machine, with a lot of fantastic details, like the cockpit, the weapons bay, the landing gear bays, in the true fashion of Steve Ginter's Naval Fighters' series. A must have for aviation buffs and modellers.
