The Tupolev SB was one of the most modern bombers in the world when it was introduced in 1936. The design would go on to see combat in Spain, China, and Finland - but by the time Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941 the aircraft had grown quite long in the tooth, and in Soviet service suffered heavy losses at the hands of the more modern Luftwaffe. Hans-Heiri Stapfer's "Tupolev SB in Action" does a good job of describing this important aircraft. Like all Squadron/Signal "In Action" series, the book has a wealth of photos, two three-view line drawings, a page of color prints, and technical specifications. The format of the book is chronological, starting with the SB prototypes before moving on to the M-100, M-100A, and M-103 powered production versions. The technical details and operational histories are good, benefiting no doubt from being published after the fall of the Soviet Union when greater access to archival material was possible. It also has a section on the Czech-built Avia B-71, information on which is quite rare.

The Ilyushin DB-3/IL-4 was an important Soviet medium bomber during the Second World War. Not only was it a multi-role aircraft, carrying out maritime torpedo bombing and transport duties in addition to its designed role as a level bomber, but aircraft of this type carried out the first bombing raids of Berlin by Soviet aircraft during WW2. Hans-Heiri Stapfer does a good job chronicling the history and technical development of this aircraft in "Ilyushin Il-4 in Action." Like most Squadron/Signal publications, the book comes with a wealth of photographs, two three view-line drawings, a page of color prints, and sample illustrations. Stapfer starts the book chronologically with the development of the TsKB-30 prototype before moving on to the initial production DB-3 model, culminating in the final IL-4 production model. Different models are discussed and illustrations are provided showing differences between versions.

The North American Aviation F-100 Super Sabre, often nicknamed "The Hun" (for Hundred), was the first production aircraft to exceed the speed of sound / in level flight. North American's F-86 Sabre and some other early jet aircraft easily broke the sound barrier in a dive. The rocket-powered Bell X-1 series also broke the sound barrier, but could not take off under their own power. The "Hun" could break the barrier at any time and was a true aircraft, breathing air to make power and able to take off and land under its own power. An evolution of the F-86 design series, the F-100 was truly a "Super Sabre". Includes info on all aspects of the F-100 Super Sabre. Filled with specifications, facts and photos, including a two-page color center section showing different markings and configurations of the airplane. A very handy guide for modelers trying for true scale appearance!

Author Alain Pelletier examines eight French bombers: the Amiot 143M and 354, Farman F.222, LeO 451, Breguet 693 along with the Bloch 131, 175 and 210; tracing their development and combat history. The 143M and F.222 aircraft were lumbering behemoths totally unsuited for modern war. The Bloch 131 and 210, with their Cyrano de Bergerac-sized noses, were poor performers; early 210s being nicknamed the 'Flying Coffin.' The best of the breed were the LeO451, the pregnant tadpole-shaped Breguet 693, Bloch 175 and the Amiot 354, a streamlined beauty. Yet, as Pelletier points out, the modern designs came too little, too late thanks to poor planning, production problems, etc. When war came, no matter what aircraft they flew, Armee de l'Air bomber units bravely flew off to battle, often suffering crippling losses. (Imagine going to war in an Amiot 143M!) The story of those warbirds is illustrated with over 100 black and white photographs and aircraft three-views along with four pages of Don Greer/Darren Glenn color profiles.
