In late 1916 and early 1917 the Royal Naval Air Service had bombed Imperial Germany and whilst the attacks were not greatly successful they proved that targets could be reached inside the enemy. And when the Germans in turn started to bomb London in 1917, public opinion began to call for revenge attacks and plans were put in place. The Army and Navy for their part, wanted a resumption of attacks on Germany's war industries. General Smuts, a member of the War Cabinet, prepared a report whose main thrust was that a separate Air Ministry and Air Force should be set up, independent of the Army and Navy and that a strategic bomber force should be formed within this force, whose sole purpose was to attack Germany. Parliament approved in November 1917 and eventually the RAF was born in April 1918, and on 6 June the Independent Force was officially formed. Keith Rennles has patiently researched all documentary evidence and reports to piece together the day-by-day record of the IF's achievements and the tremendous contribution of its pilots and personnel. This is their story. A useful reference for students of 55, 99, 104 and 110 Squadrons.

This book was published in 1981, before the A-10 proved itself in the Gulf War. It is a very good early history of the development of this plane, the weapons and its deployment in peacetime. As with all In-Action series, the book is packed with b/w photos, line drawings, color schemes. Great book for modelers who would want to make an early version of the A-10.

This is an excellent book for modelers, aviation buffs who want to see this capable, compotent, reliable aircraft. The text covers the history & development of the plane through its service in the varied theaters. Line drawings, clear & crips B&W photos show the adaptations of armament, 2 pages of color drawings show the paint schemes used. Since other Mediums such as the B-25 Mitchell and B-26 Maurader got more press, planes like these don't get as much coverage in books.

The Convair B-36 enjoyed a brief part of US Nuclear deterrent strategy. As WW2 progressed, orders were sent to the air craft designers for bigger planes that could carry heavier loads longer distances. The B-36 was to provide that answer in the form of a huge, six engine pusher plane with swept wings. Later, jet pods from the Boeing B-47 helped speed along this giant bomber. Less than 400 were built. They could carry the 10,000 lb nuclear bomb to its target. As the bombs got smaller, the B-52's that were entering service were more capable of giving the US its airborne nuclear attack ability. This book is able to take you through the development of the B-36, early design to production models and experimental versions. Plenty of crisp B&W photos, great line drawings, shots of the interior, weapons and 2 color pages help you see this unique plane. It was a plane that blended WW2 technology with the upcoming jet technology it had a little of both that gave it a short but useful service life. A great book for modelers or those who don't want to pay a fortune for the larger B-36 books that are out there and those who want just enough information to satisfy your curiosity about this warbird.
