This is the second "In Action" book that deals with US Battleships of WW2. This book covers the 'fast' Battleship classes - the North Carolina, the South Dakota and the most infamous US Class of Battleships - the Iowa Class - Iowa, New Jersey, Wisconsin and Missouri. The narrative covers the development and influences of each class, where/when they saw action. The book was published in 1984, so it captures the updates made to the Iowa Class ships under the Regan years, but not service in the first Gulf War. There are line drawings showing different rader, missle launchers, side views showing early and later modifications. Plenty of B&W photos showing the different gun mounts, interior of the 16" turret. This book, and its companion, are perfect for the modeler, or someone just getting started in studying these famous ships of WW2. |

Old, slow and ungainly, they had little 'glamor'. They escorted convoys and bombarded shores, leaving the headline-making battles for their newer sisters. So, at least, it seemed from reading those headlines. Yet the reality was quite different. That they were old was undeniable. The newest of them was already 18 years old when WW II broke out, the oldest was an antique 29. A few of them had been re-engined, giving them a top speed of 23kt. Most were still slogging along on their original power-plant and would be lucky to ever see 20kt again. They were far from beautiful, most having been refitted and rebuilt so many times that any notion of the original plan had long since disappeared. Yet, somehow, they managed to be at the right place at the right time, when history hung in the balance. They were at Pearl Harbor on a quiet Sunday morning when America suddenly found itself at war. They were at Surigao Straits, winning the last battleship surface engagement in history, while their newer sisters were off chasing decoys. And, fittingly, they were off the coast of Japan at the end of that great struggle, four long years after it began. While a case can be made that the US Navy's fast battleships were underemployed and misused, no such criticism can be made about the older battleships. They gave all that was asked and more, from the first shot of the war to the last. |

The B-52 has been flying and in service since 1954. Only 744 were built, but they have captured the imagination of all aviation fans. Nicknamed "BUFF" Big, Ugly, Fat, Fellow" (polite version), Boeing first built this bomber to carry nuclear bombs against the Soviet Union. Many updates occured over the years and the B-52 gained infamy during the Vietnam war where it was modified to carry 70,000 lbs of bombs (that would take 17 WW2 B-17's to carry that payload). This In Action book was published in 1992, so it just got in a few paragraphs of the First Gulf war. But that's not really a problem, since all models from A through H are captured in this book. Line drawings, B&W photos, excellent captions, 2 pages of color diagrams for modelers and enough narrative to give a good history of Boeing's B-52. All aspects of the plane are covered in detail - weapons carried, modifications made over the years. |

American submarines were a decisive element in winning WWII in the Pacifiic accounting for more than half of the nearly 10 million tons of Japanese naval and merchant shipping lost during the war, while also carrying out such other important duties as pilot rescue, reconnaissance and espionage. The burden of the submarine war from 1942 until victory in 1945 was borne by the US Navy's Gato-class submarines (including Balao and Tench variants).
