This In Action title goes back to the mid 70's when the series was just getting started and the aircraft was just beginning to retire from front line service. It has been out of print for a long time with no sign of an updated replacement from Squadron/Signal. With that in mind, it's still a valuable book because there has never been much in print about this aircraft. The book itself is typical early Squadron/Signal. Lots of b&w photographs with some history and first-hand piloting accounts thrown in for good measure.

The Destroyer Escort Sailors Association (DESA) is particularly pleased and proud of this publication. The ship plans have been faithfully and accurately produced and the art renderings and photograph selections bring to life a unique ship that served its role magnificently. In addition to providing a full review of the classes and characteristics of destroyer escorts, the role and purpose of wartime camouflage on these vessels is covered for the first time in public print. Also of great use and interest is the inclusion of a list of all American destroyer escorts commissioned. We believe that this publication will be an important reference for historians and naval enthusiasts.

At the beginning of World War II, the Imperial Japanese Navy operated a light cruiser force of 20 ships, and added another five during the course of the war. These fast ships, carrying seaplanes and heavy torpedo armament, generally were used as flagships for destroyer flotillas and submarine squadrons. Of these, nine were sunk by U.S. or British submarines, 11 were sunk by U.S. aircraft, two were sunk by U.S. torpedo boats or destroyers, and three were still afloat at the end of the war. Includes never before published photos!

It's amazing that, barely a decade after the Wright Brothers' flight, massive twin-engined German bombers were active over the Western Front and even crossing the English Channel to attack London. Peter Cooksley takes a look at various Gotha, A.E.G., Friedrichshafen and Zeppelin behemoths that saw action in World War I in this interesting 2000 volume from Squadron/Signal. Germany's WWI strategic bombers were a mixed lot. Though the Gotha was probably the best known multi-engine German warbird, the Zeppelin (Staaken) R.VI giants have to be seen to be believed. Powered by five or six engines and bristling with Parabellum machine guns, these incredible machines boasted wingspans of 138 feet! Cooksley's book includes over 90 photos including some fascinating in-flight shots of Staaken giants along with three-views of various bombers. And the usual, well-done Don Greer color profiles.

The term "Silent Service" evokes images of Second World War submarines complete with foul air, battery acid and diesel fuel. The present day nuclear powered fleet ballistic missile submarine brings a new meaning to the term "Silent Service." With its slippery Black painted stealthy hull and ultra quiet machinery — its silence can be very deadly to any aggressor. The first submarine was demonstrated in the Thames River. England by its builder, Dutchman Cornelius Drebbel in 1624. The boat was a wooden framework covered with oilsoaked leather and it submerged by contracting the sides thereby reducing internal air volume. During the revolutionary war an American, David Bushnell. demonstrated the TURTLE, a submersible that featured a hand powered propeller and a ballast tank. The TURTLE made the first combat sortie by a submersible when Bushnell attempted to attack a British warship in New York Harbor; however, he failed in the attempt. Robert Fulton, the inventor of the steam boat, designed a submarine that incorporated the use of compressed air for crew breathing. The design employed a sail for surface propulsion and a hand cranked propeller for propulsion while submerged. The first successful sinking of a warship by a submarine took place on 17 February 1864, by the Confederate States Ship HUNLEY and this attack revolutionized naval warfare. The CSS HUNLEY attacked and sank the Union Gunboat USS HOUSA-TONIC in Charleston, SC harbor. The CSS HUNLEY was armed with a torpedo suspended on a long spar ahead of the ship and the attack took place on the surface and at night. Both vessels were lost when the HUNLEY became entangled with the mortally wounded and sinking HOUSATONIC.
