Boeing delivered their first B-17F on 30 May 1942, just two days after the last of 512 B-17Es had rolled off the production line. Although laying claim to some 400 improvements, the most distinct visual difference in the B-I7F was the one-piece, frameless molded plastic nose cone. The Wright Cyclone engine had been developed to the point where further dramatic improvements in its performance were unlikely, but the B-17F was fitted with wide Hamilton-Standard paddle-bladed propellers giving more "bite" at higher altitudes. These new propellers improved performance, raising the service ceiling of the B-17F to 37,500 feet and increasing top speed to 325 miles per hour at 25.000 feet. Each B-17F cost the taxpayers $314,109.00. and Boeing delivered 300 between 30 May and 31 August 1942. They carried the serial numbers 41-24340 through 41-24639. Although a grand total of 3.405 B-l7Fs would be built by the Boeing-Vega-Douglas pool, these first 300 aircraft epitomize the Boeing B-I7 — the Flying Fortress.

MUSTANG - just the word brings to mind high performance. And during the Second World War, it was the nickname for what is generally acknowledged to be one of the finest fighter aircraft of the war. It was known by other "official" names like Invader and Apache, and unofficial terms like SPAM CAN. The aircraft had many shapes, different engines, and one variant even had two fuselages. But they were all still Mustangs, "The most aerodynamically perfect pursuit plane in existence!" The design of the Mustang began as a series of RAF requirements for a fighter aircraft that could be built in the United States to augment the dwindling fighter inventories being used up in the life and death struggle of the Battle of Britain. Indeed, the Mustang design and developments are directly tied to British requirements throughout the history of the airplane. The RAF needed a new fighter and North American Aviation gave them the Allison-engined P-51 /Mustang I series. When the RAF wanted to develop the design further through use of a higher performance power plant. North American offered them the Rolls-Royce Merlin powered P-51B Mustang series. The use of the sliding bubble canopy was based on the RAF developed Malcolm Hood; although the 360 degree, full vision canopy was a purely North American design. The Mustang was designed and developed throughout the Second World War to meet various Allied air force requirements for a long range escort fighter aircraft. It more than met those requirements as many a Luftwaffe pilot will attest. But after the end of the war, when the other major fighter types like the P-38, P-47, and Spitfire, were long gone from air force inventories, the Mustang was still flying combat. Five years after the end of the Second World War, the Mustang was the leading fighter-bomber in the "jet war" in Korea. Four years after the end of the Korean War. Mustangs were fighting over the Sinai Desert with the Israeli Defense Force/Air Force. Mustangs were the basis of defense by more nations than any other major fighter type in history. Ironically, the only two major nations not to be equipped with Mustangs were the old foes of the P-51. Germany and Japan. Today only a handful of the 16.000+ Mustangs that were built survive. Some are in museums, some are flying in air races, many fly the air show circuit and some are movie stars. But all those lucky enough to see them flying still marvel at, "The most aerodynamically perfect pursuit plane in existence."

...At some point back in the prehistoric period a man must have decided to boast of his prowess as a hunter or warrior by selecting some tangible method to publicly show how skillful or fierce he proclaimed himself to be. What form this took will never be known but it could have been the tooth of a saber-toothed tiger, the skin of some animal or perhaps the head of an enemy of his tribe. History does recount the use of scalps, shrunken heads and other such items for this purpose. As man became more civilized he had to forsake such grisly means and rather than display the remains of his victory, he decided to use personal ornamentation. Fierce head dress and masks, warpaint, tattoos and other similar items served to show others" how great a warrior he was. As warfare advanced the need for larger groups to be recognized as either friend or foe brought about the development of uniforms and in time these became very colorful and distinctive. Mention the Bengal Lancers, the U.S. 7th Cavalry, the Black Watch, Cossacks, Coldstream Guards. U.S. Marine Corps, French Foreign Legion, or the Green Berets and a picture of a man in a particular uniform quickly comes to mind and conveys the idea that he was part of an elite organization with a sense of pride and a strong esprit de corps. It was this type of background and the need for recognition that was responsible for the use of victory and mission markings on aircraft that began during the First World War and have been carried forward to this day.
