One of the most noteworthy German fighter pilots of World War I was Leutnant der Reserve Carl Degelow, whose squadron of mostly black Fokker D.VII fighters posed a formidable threat to some of Britain's most celebrated air units on the Western Front.
Degelow had a unique approach to aerial combat which fascinated the author, Peter Kilduff, so much that in 1979 he wrote Germany's Last Knight of the Air about his exploits, a book long out of print. Le premier chasseur russe à obtenir une véritable renommée internationale le fut paradoxalement bien au-delà des frontières soviétiques. Conçu à partir du I-5 mais comportant nombre de modifications comme sa voilure ou sa motorisation, l'avion se caractérisait par sa compacité et sa maniabilité.
Vraiment au point lors de la Guerre civile d'Espagne, le I-15 qui fit son premier vol en 1933, fut largement exporté vers les forces républicaines espagnoles qui le produisirent aussi en série doté de son moteur Curtiss. Face aux nationalistes, pourtant dotés de chasseurs allemands modernes, le I-15 Chato ou le Curtiss prouvèrent leur efficacité et leur robustesse, donnant ainsi à ce petit chasseur sa renommée mondiale.
Cet ouvrage traite du développement de cet avion dans sa globalité mais aborde sa carrière opérationnelle principalement en Espagne où l'histoire de cet avion est la plus riche. La participation d'un pilote républicain à cet ouvrage le rend plus intéressant encore y apportant une touche de vécu non négligeable.
La beauté de ce petit biplan, son histoire, ses décorations méritent qu'on s'y attarde un peu. Ce livre est le premier en français sur le sujet, voilà donc une excellente façon d'aborder de nouveaux horizons! |
