Built from 1954 to 1979, Douglas' Skyhawk had a longer production life than any other of the Free World's combat aircraft and served as the standard light attack carrier aircraft of the U.S. Navy for almost 20 years, providing the bulk of its striking power during much of the Vietnam War.

The Seversky P-35 was the first fighter aircraft from the design team of Alexander de Seversky and Alexander Kartveli, a pair of Russian immigrants that would be at the forefront of American military aviation through the years before and during the Second World War. Seversky was a Russian First World War Ace with thirteen victories. He defected to the United Slates in 1918, founding the Seversky Aviation Corporation in 1931. Kartveli immigrated to the U.S. in 1928 and joined Seversky as his Chief Engineer. The P-35 was a direct development of the Seversky SEV-3 amphibian aircraft, a three place, all-metal, low-wing monoplane that was initially fitted with a pair of EDO Corporation floats and wheels. The SEV-3 was powered by a Wright J-6/R-975 nine cylinder radial engine offering 420 hp. The very sleek amphibious aircraft could attain speeds in excess of 190 inph. Seversky himself set a new World Speed Record in the SEV-3 on 9 October 1933 at 179.7 mph. The SEV-3 was years ahead of its time, as no other amphibious aircraft could attain such performance. In 1934, Seversky modified the SEV-3 amphibian for land-based operations only. The floats were removed and a pair of fixed main landing gear with wheel "spats" were installed. Seversky wanted his aircraft to be able to compete for one of the new military contracts being offered by the War Department.

For those interested in researching the military aspect of the Arab-Israeli conflict, finding information about the militaries of the Arab nations is very difficult. What little that is published is either published in the Arabic language or is so highly suspect (propaganda) that it is of negligible factual value. That's one of the factors that makes Charles Stafrace's book "Arab Air Forces" so uniquely valuable. It is not only written in the English language, but Mr. Stafrace has kept his political viewpoint to a minimum making it tremendously easier to read than comparable resources in Arabic or translated from Arabic. The book itself is grouped to give short concise histories of the air arms of various Arab nations as well as speculative numbers and types of aircraft used during Arab Air Forces' histories. The book was published in 1994 so don't expect information any more current than 1994.

When the United States Navy made the decision to enter the jet age, Navy planners were faced with a number of problems, especially given the state of the art at the time. Early jets required long runways for their take off runs and their high speed landing roll outs. Their high rate of fuel consumption resulted in a short range. This was compounded by the need for carriers to carry jet fuel in addition to standard aviition gasoline. These problems, coupled with the tricycle landing gear, which had never been used on a carrier, and the need for a catapult assisted take off would all have to be overcome before jets could go to sea on carriers. Pilots would be required to develop special techniques to handle the tricycle gear and operating these jets from the smaller class of escort carriers did not seem to be possible. One possible solution to these problems seemed to be a composite aircraft, one combining a piston engine with a jet engine in the same airframe. It was felt that such an aircraft would offer the best features of each power system, could be developed much faster and could operate from any carrier in the fleet at that time. The jet engine would provide the extra power needed for added speed in combat, give the aircraft a faster rate of climb and improve operational capabilities at all altitudes. It would also offer added safety, since the aircraft would be basically a twin engined aircraft and, if one of the engines became inoperative, it could return to the ship on the other. The piston engine would be used for take off and landing, for wave offs and for the most economical fuel consumption rate at cruising speeds. It was obvious that this compromise clearly offered, at least, a temporary solution to the problems facing the Bureau of Aeronatutics (BuAer) headed by Admiral John S. McClain, in December of 1942. Consequently, a proposal for a composite fighter was drawn up and issued to nine aircraft manufacturing companies, including the Ryan Aeronautical Corporation of San Diego, California. Ryan at once indicated their interest in the project and requested a meeting with the Navy officials which was quickly arranged. It only took Ryan's Chief Engineer, Ben T. Solmon , three hours to convince the Navy people that Ryan would be up to the task and that they had grasped the objectives of the proposal and were capable of doing the job.
