Maximillian II Emmanuel was one of the premier military leaders of his time. He was often referred to as the "Blue King" because he nearly always wore his favorite color, blue. His well trained and drilled Bavarian army was likewise clad in their famous medium blue uniforms. A color which was worn by Bavarian soldiers over the next two centuries. In addition to being a great military leader in battles of the War of Spanish Succession and helping thwart the Turkish invasion of Europe Maximillian II Emmanuel was a pioneer patron of Baroque art and architecture. Eglin Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located 1-mile (1.6 km) southwest of Valparaiso in Okaloosa County, Florida, United States. It was named in honor of World War I aviator and test pilot Lt Col Frederick Irving Eglin. Since its founding in 1933 Eglin has evolved from a remote bombing and gunnery range in the 1930s (although very little actual bombing was done at the outset) into the military's primary non-nuclear test facility, it now supports a wide variety of multi-service test missions as well as providing a home for many special operations functions.

The Pfalz D.IIIA offered few advantages over the D.III other than the important relocation of the machine guns to the upper fuselage thus making them more accessible to the pilot and easier to aim in combat. An increased area tailplane and rounded lower wing tips on most D.IIIAs provided some aerodynamic improvements although neither version was as readily popular with the majority of German pilots as were the Albatros D.v, Fokker Dr.I and, later, the D.VII.
This volume presents a unique reference package which includes the largest collective number of Pfalz D.IIIA photographs ever published. Once again historian Peter M. Grosz shares with us his unique archive and historical material while draughtsman Steve Simkin provides exacting detailed drawings to the standard 1/72nd and 1/48th scales which will delight all modellers. Several of the D.IIIA photographs in this book are published for the very first time and while a number of them are admittedly of poor quality, they reveal sufficiently interesting markings or rarely-appreciated details that warrant their inclusion. |
