In 1953, the mainstay of carrier-based anti-submarine warfare (ASW) forces in the Navy were represented by a pair of Grumman AF-2W and AF-2S Guardians flying as a hunter-killer team and operating from an escort carrier of the Commencement Bay(CVE-105) class. The Guardian's wingspan of 60 feet, length of 43 feet 5 inches and height of 16 feet 7 inches, made it the largest single-engine piston-driven airplane ever to operate from an aircraft carrier.

The American Lockheed XFV (sometimes referred to as the Salmon) was an experimental tailsitter prototype built by Lockheed to demonstrate the operation of a vertical takeoff and landing fighter for protecting convoys. Starting with a brief hop on 23 December 1953 piloted by Herman "Fish" Salmon, the aircraft made a total of 32 flights, demonstrating transition between horizontal and vertical flight. No vertical takeoffs were performed, however. The aircraft was fitted with fixed landing gear so that it could take off horizontally. Performance was disappointing, and the project was cancelled in June 1955.

Forever associated with Nelson's last battle, HMS Victory is one of the most famous ships of all time, and is now preserved as a major part pf the Royal Naval Museum in Portsmouth. The ship's survival is particularly appropriate since Victory is not only an example of the ultimate sailing warship - the three decker First Rate - but was also the most popular and successful 100-gun ship of the period. Forty years old by the time of Trafalgar, she had been the flagship of half a dozen famous admirals, and was to continue in active service until 1812.

This book has no color pictures and only a page or two of text for each featured airplane. However, it does provide an overview of the performance and interesting facts about EVERY Army-AirForce and Air Force fighter up to the F-18. A few are skipped - there is no P-14, P-18, P-19, P-73, P-74, F-96, or F-13. Every other number, from P-1 to F-111/F-1 to F18 is present with pictures and line drawings. Note - most WWII Navy fighters are NOT included (F-4U, F-4F, F-6F etc.), but most Navy jet fighters ARE included (F-1, F-9F, F-11 etc). It also has on the insides of the front and back covers scale line drawings of all the aircraft in the book.
