This book offers the most detailed look yet at McDonnell's One-Oh-Wonder. Many detailed photographs, almost all of which were taken specifically for this publication, are included. For example, photographs of the radar antenna in the F-101B. Cockpit photos are included for the RF-101A/C, F-101B, and F-101F, while flight manual drawings provide details of the F-101A/C cockpit. While emphasis is placed on the most popular of the Voodoo variants, the F-101 B,coverage is not limited to only the two seat version. Details of the F-101A/C, RF-101A/C, and the reconnaissance conversions, the RF-101 B, -G, and -H are also provided. A developmental history that also covers the XF-88 Voodoo is included, as is background information on each version. But this is kept to a minimum in order to include as many of the detailed photographs as possible. For the scale modeler, the Modeler's Section covers the Voodoo kits, from the F-88 by Lindberg, dating back to the 1950s, to the Monogram F-101B, thus spanning over thirty years of model making.

The Focke-Wulf Ta 152 was a World War II Luftwaffe high-altitude fighter-interceptor. The Ta 152 was a development of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 aircraft, but the prefix was changed from "Fw" to "Ta" to recognize the contributions of Kurt Tank who headed the design team. Total production - including prototypes and pre-production aircraft - is estimated at about 220, but only some 43 production aircraft were delivered until the end of the war. This was too late to allow the Ta 152 to have a significant impact on the war effort.

The Lockheed SR-71 is an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed A-12 and YF-12A aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works as a Black project. The SR-71 was unofficially named the Blackbird. A defensive feature of the aircraft was its high speed and operating altitude, whereby, if a surface-to-air missile launch were detected, standard evasive action was simply to accelerate. The SR-71 line was in service from 1964 to 1998, with 12 of the 32 aircraft being destroyed in accidents, though none were lost to enemy action.

The McDonnell F-101 Voodoo was a supersonic military fighter flown by the USAF and the RCAF. In the late 1940s, the Air Force had started a research project into future interceptor aircraft that eventually settled on an advanced specification known as the 1954 interceptor. Contracts for this specification eventually resulted in the selection of the F-102 Delta Dagger, but by 1952 it was becoming clear that none of the parts of the specification other than the airframe would be ready by 1954; the engines, weapons and fire control systems were all going to take too long to get into service. An effort was then started to quickly produce an interim supersonic design to replace the various subsonic interceptors then in service, and the F-101 airframe was selected as a starting point.
Although McDonnell proposed the designation F-109 for the new aircraft (which was to be a substantial departure from the basic Voodoo), the USAF assigned the designation F-101B. The Voodoo featured a modified cockpit to carry a crew of two, with a larger and more rounded forward fuselage to hold a Hughes MG-13 fire control radar. F-101F was the dual-control trainer version of F-101B.

Of all the aircraft that emanated from the drawing boards of German designers during the Second World War, it was perhaps the Do 335 that was the most intriguing. Unique in its push-pull format, it could have been the prototype for all future conventionally powered fighters had it not been for the advent of the turbojet. Even so, it was the fastest piston-engined fighter built in Germany during the war and suffered none of the asymmetric problems normally associated with a power failure in a conventional twin-engined aircraft.
In this Close-Up the authors have attempted to tell the story not only of the Do 335 itself, but of its many mixed-powered derivitives, nono of which was built before the end of the war.
