Nose art — if Webster had defined the term he probably would have noted that it was the personalisation of some type of machine, usually an aircraft, with a name and/or painting that reflected the present "owners" feelings towards that machine, his reason for using that machine, or his present emotions.

Nose art — there is no definition for it in any Webster's Dictionary, but just ask any air or ground crewmen from any war since the Second World War and they'll tell you not only what it is, but what it meant to them. It was a way of personalizing a piece of machinery that you had to depend on and it appeared on almost everything that was used in combat, from aircraft to tanks. Most of the really beautiful and/or outrageous art appeared on aircraft. In the Second World War. nose art was divided into four basic categories: home, patriotism or the war. music and sex. Aircraft were named after pieces of that far away, lost item — home. "Bainbridge Belle" and "Jersey Jerk" were examples of this. Patriotism and the war caused many a flourish with the paint brush. Hitler and Tojo were often seen being battered about on the sides of B-17s and B-24s. The music of World War 2 also led to a great many names like "Pistol Packin' Mama" which was used on almost every fighting aircraft type in the war. But undoubtedly, it was the magical three letter word SEX that led to most of the art work. Naked and almost naked women were painted on every type of aircraft, in almost every air force. Some of it was beautifully done like "Cherokee Strip" and "Sugar Puss." Some of it quite vulgar, such as the 8th Air Force B-17s "Mount 'N Ride" or "Rosie's Sweat Box." Quite a bit of the nose art was copied from Vargas paintings that appeared in Esquire magazine, the World War 2 equivalent to Playboy. The Vargas girls were never named in the magazine but carried every conceivable name when repeated on the aircraft. Nose art became so popular that many times the aircraft name and art was also painted on the crews flight jackets, especially in the 8th Air Force. But when war broke out in Korea, the American public, the GIs and the professional soldiers were all a little confused. Very few people knew why we were in Korea in the first place. Consequently, the nose art reflected this confusion. Oh sure, there still was the ever present subject of SEX and this was quite apparent on the B-29s that took the war deep into North Korea. The 19th BOMB GROUP based at Kadena was even subjected to censorship on their aircraft. It seems that the base commander at Kadena had his wife living with him on base, and she got upset at seeing all that nudity on the nose of the aircraft. Never mind that the crews were laying their lives on the line each and every day. against a very formidable foe. She put the pressure on her husband and he ordered that all nose art be "clothed."

This book focuses on the combat careers of the last of the famous Sopwith fighters to enter service during World War 1, the Dolphin and the Snipe, both of which were built on the strong scouting heritage of the Pup and Camel. The Dolphin featured the unique negative-staggered biplane wing arrangement, which provided the pilot with the best possible tactical view forward for seeking out his enemy. Used extensively on the Western Front, the Dolphin proved very effective in combat, with a substantial number of British aces scoring kills with the fighter. The Snipe was built as the successor of the highly successful Camel, and entered service with the fledgling Royal Air Force in the summer of 1918. Although seeing just a few months of action before the Armistice, the Snipe nevertheless proved its superiority over virtually all other fighters.

Army co-operation flying had a long tradition within the RAF in the inter-war period. It had its source in the WW! experience of the then Royal Flying Corps in support of ground forces. After the Armistice the newly-established Royal Air Force operated either specialised aircraft like the Bristol Fighter or adapted general purpose types, eg. the Fairey IIIF or later the Fairey Gordon. In the second half of the twenties, the Bristol aircraft was succeeded by a standard army co-operation type, the Armstrong Whitworth Atlas. Then followed a period in which the army co-operation units came once again to depend upon adaptation designs - the Hawker Audax/Hardy and Hector biplanes, which all were developed variants of the Hart bomber of the late 1920s. While the Hawker-designed, Westland-built Hector could be regarded only as an interim type, a new Specification A.39/34 was issued in April 1935, calling for a more modern aircraft to replace the Hawker Audax with a design exclusively conforming lo army co-operauon needs. Good slow-flying characteristics for visual observation of ground forces, short landing and take-off, provision for message pick-up, aerial reconnaissance, a radio and a small bomb load were required, all conveying the "conservative" RAF demands for such an aeroplane, but irrespective of recent advanced progress in military aviation. Four companies submitted their proposals to the Air Ministry tender. Bristol offered their Type 148 low-wing monoplane. Hawker came up with a biplane and A.V. Roe designed the Avro 670. As a result of Westlands lobbying at the Air Ministry, a Westland contender was also included in the competition, eventually winning the bid and beating the Bristol, the only other accepted firm, leaving it lo build only two prototypes.

Walk Around No. 12. Author-illustrator Lou Drendel supplies an up-close-and-personal view of World War II's Mitchell bomber in this 1997 Squadron/Signal release. Few American bombers took on so many different missions and configurations than North American's versatile twin as borne out by this nicely-done 'Walk Around' entry. The B-25 served with the USAAF, USMC, RAF, RAAF and a host of other services. Likewise it evolved from a conventionally-armed medium bomber to a low-level strafer equipped with devastating combinations of .50-calibers, bpmbs, rockets and sometimes cannon. While Drendel covers all the various models, the emphasis is on the H model gunship and the J model bomber. The book features 82 pages of images: half b&w; half color. Almost all the b&w photographs are vintage shots showing various B-25s in service. With one exception, all the color imges are of warbird models. Don Greer contributes four pages of color profiles.

The Pinan / Heian series are often the first katas taught in the majority of modern dojos. This can lead to the Pinan / Heian katas being thought of as nothing more than introductory katas that are really only suitable for children and junior grades. However, it is my belief that the Pinan / Heian katas are grossly undervalued and do in act represent a coherent fighting system
