Wie kein anderer vor ihm war sein Interesse in ganz besonderer Weise der Marine zugewandt. Vor seiner Zeit hatte Deutschlands Marine eine eigentlich nur kümmerliche, wenig beachtete und im Ausland noch weniger gefürchtete Rolle gespielt. Dies war auf verschiedene Ursachen zurückzuführen; die wichtigsten von diesen waren: - Die Kriege der Jahre 1864,1866 und 1870-71 waren fast ausschließlich vom Heer geführt worden, nirgendwo ergab sich für die Marine eine Gelegenheit, entscheidend oder das Kriegsgeschehen wenigstens beeinflussend einzugreifen. - Die Bedeutung der Marine für den Schutz des Seehandels und für die Wahrung der deutschen Interessen im Ausland und Übersee war bisher weder bei Parlament noch bei Regierung noch im Herrscherhaus erkannt worden. Erst 1884 hatte Deutschland angefangen, eine Kolonialmacht zu werden, erst damit begann die Marine, allmählich aus ihrer Bedeutungslosigkeit herauszutreten, aber dieser Prozeß vollzog sich schwerfällig und hinkte der politischen Entwicklung nach.

ABC Airliner Series. American Airlines was formed in 1934 by the amalgamation of the numerous small carriers. It's interests spread far and wide across the United States, reaching from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast. An international career almost started in 1942 when the airline was awarded the Dallas-Mexico route, but wartime restrictions prevented the launch until hostilities had ceased. Die deutsche Kriegsmarine verfügte 1939 beim Kriegsausbruch nur über 22 Zerstörer, davon wurde dieZ 22 erst nach dem Ausbruch der Feindseligkeiten in Dienst gestellt. Grund dafür war, daß die Neuentwicklung der Zerstörer relativ spät angefangen hat, vor allem wegen der restriktiven Bestimmungen des Friedensvertrages von Versailles. Die vorhandenen Einheiten gehörten den Klassen ../ 1" und ../ 17" (bzw. den Typen „Zerstörer 1934", „Zerstörer 1934A" und „Zerstörer 1936"). Diese Schiffe galten als „Mädchen für alles", so waren ihre Verluste in den ersten Kriegsjahren übermäßig groß, vor allem im Frühling 1940, wo während der Norwegen-Kampagne zehn Schiffe dieser Gattung in Narwik verloren gingen1. In 1939 gab es auch 15 Torpedoboote, nur elf davon waren nach dem I. Weltkrieg erbaut Weitere Zerstörer (von Z 23 bis Z 30) und Flottentorpedoboote Hl- 21): befanden sich in Bau oder waren bestellt. Während des Krieges hatte man weitere Zerstörer und T-Boote in Auftrag gegeben, bis zum Kriegsende sind nur zehn Zerstörer (Z 31-39, Z 43) und 15 T-Boote (T22-T 36) tatsächlich in Dienst gestellt worden.

August 1945 — Japan's dream of conquest and empire was ended. The vision of an Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere which had seemed so bright in early 1941 now lay buried beneath the twisted rubble of the cities on the Home Islands, it lay rusting on the bottom of the vast Pacific Ocean, and it lay rotting in the unchartered jungles of a hundred scattered islands or the rain forests on the continent of Asia. From the first day of the war, the fighter pilots of the Army Air Force met the enemy in the skies. This book is concerned with a relatively small number of these men, the ones who by downing at least five enemy planes in the air qualified for the title "ace". It is, however, a tribute to the thousands of other men who served with the Air Force in the Pacific. The airwar against Japan was truely vast in terms of the area involved. In the 45 months between Pearl Harbor and the cessation of hostilities, the ebb and flow of battle touched some 30 million square miles. This is equivalent to roughly one sixth the total surface of the earth. By way of comparison, the war against Germany was almost a local action. The Eleventh Air Force carried on a short, cold and lonely war in the far north in response to the Japanese invastion of the Aleutians. Though actions were infrequent, a few of the pilots who served in this theater later went on to serve in other theaters. In the Far East, it was the American Volunteer Group and later the Tenth and Fourteenth Air Forces that carried the air war to the Japanese. The Tenth was based in India while the Fourteenth operated from China. The Central Pacific was the preserve of the Seventh and Twentieth Air Forces toward the end of the war as the noose drew tight around the Japanese Home Islands.
