"Kreuzer EMDEN" - das war in den Jahren nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg ein in der ganzen Nation wohlvertrauter Begriff. Daran verknüpfte sich die Erinnerung an jenen kleinen Kreuzer der , Kaiserlichen Marine, der völlig auf sich allein gestellt unter abenteuerlichsten Verhältnissen im Indischen Ozean höchst erfolgreich operierte und letztlich seinen Jägern erlag. In der Literatur nahm diese EMDEN seither einen bevorzugten Platz ein, gelesen wurden die Bücher und Berichte über ihn von Alt und Jung, vor allem aber von uns damals heranwachsenden Jungen. Wo der Name der Stadt Emden - aus welcherlei Gründen auch immer - auch nur beiläufig erwähnt wurde, sofort wurde er in Verbindung mit dem ruhmreichen Kreuzer gebracht. Eins von vielerlei Beispielen: Als Mitte der 30er Jahre ein etwa zehnjähriger aus Emden zugezogener Junge in unsere Klasse aufgenommen wurde, bekam er sofort seinen "besonderen" Namen: "Kreuzer EMDEN" nannten wir ihn fortan, er hörte darauf eher, als wenn wir ihn bei seinem Allerweltsvornamen riefen (zu dieser Zeit mag er noch nicht geahnt haben, daß er wenige Jahre später selbst zur Kriegsmarine ginge und nach Kriegsende noch viele Jahre bei der neuen Bundesmarine dienen würde). Für die heutige Generation ist - abgesehen von verschwindend wenigen Ausnahmen - dies alles kein Thema mehr, und wird es doch einmal genannt, so weiß niemand mehr, damit etwas anzufangen. Wie sollte es aber auch in unserer schnellebigen, ereignisreichen und noch dazu dem "Zeitgeist" unterworfenen Zeit anders sein?! Mit diesem Band wird versucht, die Erinnerung an die drei Kreuzer wachzurufen, die den Namen EMDEN getragen haben. Dabei wird sozusagen das "Pferd von hinten aufgezäumt": Begonnen wird mit der dritten EMDEN (um die Reihe über die großen Einheiten der Kriegsmarine zu vervollständigen). Ein weiteres Heft wird dann später über die erste und die zweite EMDEN berichten. |

AIR FORCE COLORS VOLUME 3 summarizes/illustrates colors and markings carried by Air Force aircraft in the Pacific, on the Home Front and on postwar aircraft. It's a visual delight and one of Squadron/Signal's best efforts ever! Given such a wide canvas, Bell breaks the subject down into five more manageable sections: "Pacific Colors;" "The Home Front;" "CBI Markings;" "B-29s Against Japan;" and "Postwar USAAF to USAF." After giving general information on each subject Bell then goes into more specifics. The "CBI Markings" pages, for instance, include separate sections on markings carried by Fighter, Bomber, Air Commando, Transport, ATC, Recce and Misc. Units in that theater. Although the text is dry, VOLUME 3 is a visual treat with 250+ black & white and color photographs and great Don Greer artwork. The accompanying artwork really makes this book: nine pages of aircraft profiles, two pages showing group and squadron insignia along with five pages of tail markings; all in glorious color. The color profiles feature a smorgasbord of warbirds in myriad paint schemes: 5th AF Lightnings, Mustangs, Mitchells, Liberators and Black Widows; stateside AT-6s, P-29s, Catalinas and C-54s; postwar Mustangs, P-80s and B-29s; etc. |

This book, the second volume of Squadron/Signal's continuing series. Air Force Colors, covers the development of camouflage and markings of USAAF aircraft in the European and Mediterranean theaters in World War 11. The coverage includes AAFAC (Army Air Force Antisubmarine Command) and part of the story of 6th AF. This volume also tells, for the first time, the story of the Haze Paint camouflage conceived for reconnaissance aircraft. It concludes with brief mention of the Green Project which brought soldiers and aircraft home and the Occupation Force thai stayed behind at war's end. The great expansion of forces brought on by the war forced the Army Air Force to formalize its organizational structure and the markings of its units. The smallest unit of aircraft was a Flight. Usually composed of three aircraft (except fighters Flights which normally contained four aircraft). Flights were informal units whose members often changed from mission to mission, rarely were there markings to indicate Flight membership. The exception (there musi always be an exception) was 8th AF fighter units which often colored rudder trim tabs to indicate the Flight. The smallest administrative unit was the Squadron, usually composed of three Flights. This was the standard combat unit, all of a Squadron's aircraft most often being given the same task or target on any particular mission. The Squadron was also the bask unit foi markings. Each USAAF combat Squadron that operated in the ETO or M 10 had a two letter or letter-number designator thai was carried on the fuselage, split from the individual aircraft letter by I he national insignia, likewise, each Squadron had an insignia, though the application of these insignia to aircraft was discouraged or. in some cases, specifically banned. 8th AF, in particular, repeatedly rejected the use of Squadron emblems on aircraft but some units defied the order. 12th AF aircraft, on the other hand, frequently carried Squadron emblems. Some of these originated pre-war, others came from the fertile imaginations of Squadron members, still others were contributed by the major cartoon studios, such as Walt Disney or Warner Bros. |
