When the Romans left Britain around AD 410 the island had not been fully subjugated. In the Celtic fringes the unconquered native peoples were presented with the opportunity to pillage what remained of Roman Britain. By way of response the Post-Roman Britons did their best to defend themselves from attack, and to preserve what they could of the systems left behind by the Romans. The best way to defend their territory was to create fortifications. While some old Roman forts were maintained, the Post-Roman Britons also created new strongholds, or re-occupied some of the long-abandoned hill-forts first built by their ancestors before the coming of the Romans. Packed with photographs, diagrams and full color artwork reconstructions, this book provides a unique examination of the design and development of the fortifications during the Age of Arthur, analyzing their day-to-day use and their effectiveness in battle. It closely describes the locations that are linked to the most famous warlord of the Dark Ages, the legendary Arthur - Tintagel, Cadbury and "Camelot". Although these great bastions were to eventually fall, for a few brief decades they succeeded in stemming the tide of invasion and in doing so safeguarding the culture and civilization of Post-Roman Celtic Britain. |

Since the establishment of the Red Army in 1927, China's military has responded to profound changes in Chinese society, particularly its domestic politics, shifting economy, and evolving threat perceptions. Recently tensions between China and Taiwan and other east Asian nations have aroused great interest in the extraordinary transformation and new capabilities of the Chinese army. In A History of the Modern Chinese Army, Xiaobing Li, a former member of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), provides a comprehensive examination of the PLA from the Cold War to the beginning of the twenty-first century that highlights the military's central function in modern Chinese society. In the 1940s, the Chinese army was in its infancy, and many soldiers were rural conscripts and volunteers who had received little formal schooling. The Chinese military rapidly increased its mobility and weapon strength, and the Korean War and Cold War offered intense combat experience that not only allowed soldiers to hone their fighting techniques but also helped China to develop military tactics tailored to the surrounding countries whose armies posed the most immediate threats. Yet even in the 1970s, the completion of a middle school education (nine years) was considered above-average, and only 4 percent of the 224 top Chinese generals had any college credit hours. However, in 1995 the high command began to institute massive reforms to transform the PLA from a labor-intensive force into a technology-intensive army. Continually seeking more urban conscripts and emphasizing higher education, the PLA Reserve Officer Training and Selection program recruited students from across the nation. These reservists would become commissioned officers upon graduation, and they majored in atomic physics, computer science, and electrical engineering. Grounding the text in previously unreleased official Chinese government and military records as well as the personal testimonies of more than two hundred PLA soldiers, Li charts the development of China's armed forces against the backdrop of Chinese society, cultural traditions, political history, and recent technological advancements. A History of the Modern Chinese Army links China's military modernization to the country's growing international and economic power and provides a unique perspective on China's esttablishment and maintenance of one of the world's most advanced military forces. |

This is a wonderful book for the rather short length! However, this book fills 64 pages much better than other books do to twice the number of pages. Covering only Tai-Otoshi and O-Uchi-Gari, the book goes into the sort of detail that demands multiple re-readings. Just the sort of detail that will instruct even long-time black belts. With plenty of B/W photos, this is easily one of the more valuable books on Judo. |

Apprenez comment vous défendre en 40 leçons. Voici longtemps que j'avais l'intention de placer devant le public un livre sur le JU-JITSU JAPONAIS. En produisant un tel ouvrage, mon but sera d'éveiller, sans emmêler et confondre, l'intérêt des débutants. Nombreux sont les livres sur ce sujet! Mais le plus souvent ils sont si longs et compliqués que les novices, devant une telle abondance de matière, sont submergés et finissent par se décourager. S'attachant seulement au côté spectaculaire, ils n'essaieront le plus souvent que des projections ou immobilisations difficiles et compliquées. Les contacts que j'ai pu avoir dans mes, voyages, m'ont permis de réaliser le livre dont je rêvais et, pour le rendre encore plus intéressant, j'ai ajouté une partie "JUDO SELF DEFENSE". N'ayant pour but que de donner une idée précise à tous ceux intéressés par ce sujet, "JU-JITSU" Japonais n'a nullement la prétention d'être complet. Seulement, les lecteurs qui l'auront parcouru et qui désireraient en savoir davantage, approfondiront d'eux-mêmes leurs connaissances. De plus, j'e suis convaincu qu'avec les bases fondamentales ainsi acquises, ils découvriront d'eux-mêmes d'autres projections ou immobilisations. Dans le même ordre d'idée, la section "JUDO SELF DEFENSE" n'est pas une entité en elle-même. J’ai choisi ces mouvements après une élimination portant sur un grand nombre d'ouvrages, lesquels je pense, conviendront à ceux qui auront assimilé "JU-JITSU" Japonais. Il existe dans le self-Défense une matière très abondante et beaucoup de personnes ne réalisent pas que défense ou attaque, ne s'ébauchent pas. J'ai sélectionné certains mouvements fondamentaux, lesquels seront la base de JUDO-SELF DEFENSE et qui vous seront particulièrement utiles dans les circonstances courantes. Les Samouraïs (ou guerriers du Japon) furent pendant des siècles, les seuls initiés dans les mystères de ces arts de combat et ce n'est qu'en 1867 environ, que la connaissance en est devenue générale (l'Ocident n'en bénéficia qu'au début de ce siècle). Il y a, et il y a eu, différentes méthodes de SELF DEFENSE en vogue au Japon. Ce sont des branches provenant de la méthode de combat des Samouraïs telles que JUDO, KENDO, KEN-JITSU, TORI ou SHIME. JU-JITSU apprend l'entraînement au sol, l'équilibre ou les projections, "TAI-JITSU" où l'on emploie beaucoup de force, et JUDO, qui décrit une méthode qui emploie moins de travail au sol que celle en vigueur jadis. En Occident, nous utilisons le mot JUDO pour les méthodes de SELF DEFENSE, employée dans la police. Les militaires font d'ailleurs eux aussi un grand usage de JUDO. |
