The concept of disaster medicine has been in evolution for decades. Its requisite components were buried within disparate,often apparently unrelated disciplines and specialties. Today, we know these diverse disciplines must work seamlessly together and are essential for disaster preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery. Events such as the tsunami in Indonesia,Hurricane Katrina in the United States, the cyclone in Myanmar, and the Novel H1N1 (2009) pandemic have served to reinforce our interdependence on one another and the globalness of our interconnected responsibilities. Besides correcting some minor linguistic and print errors, I have in the second edition included a collection of different exercise problems which have been used in the training of students at NTNU. They illustrate how the models described in the previous chapters can be used to solve practical problems of more interdisciplinary nature. Each of them contains a 'problem description' and some background information on materials and welding conditions. The exercises are designed to illuminate the microstructural connections throughout the weld thermal cycle and show how the properties achieved depend on the operating conditions applied. Solutions to the problems are also presented. These are not complete or exhaustive, but are just meant as an aid to the reader to develop the ideas further.

Obstetric anesthesia is a rapidly expanding and evolving field, and this is certainly not the first book to address the subspecialty. When the idea of a completely new text was first raised, our first questions were whether there was a need for a book, and how it would differ from previous textbooks. We saw a need for a practical guide to patient care and management, one that could be consulted quickly (and often) to outline a concrete course of clinical management: how to manage specific patients in specific situations, what drug to give, how to give it, how much to give, and when to stop and try something different. Our goal in this book has been to provide anethesiologists and anesthetists, both in training and in practice, with that practical reference. We have worked diligently to make the information easy to use—when possible, we have tried to distill essential information down into tables, charts, diagrams, and flowcharts which can be quickly accessed and applied. We have tried to limit the discussion to the essential background, rationale, and science behind clinical decision-making. This is not intended to be an exhaustive reference textbook, though the readings and references at the end of each chapter do provide additional background and the basis for further study.

It is abundantly clear that the endocannabinoid signalling system is ubiquitously expressed throughout the animal kingdom from simple invertebrates to man, and that it is represented in almost every cell type. This atlas describes the anatomical basics of dendrochronology and wood technology. Since the publication in 1967 of “Atomic Sources and Detectors,” Volumes 4A and 4B of this series, the field of atomic, molecular, and optical physics has seen exciting and explosive growth. Much of this expansion has been tied to the development of new sources, such as the laser, which have revolutionized many aspects of science, technology, and everyday life. This growth can be seen in the dramatic difference in content between the present volumes and the 1967 volumes. Not all techniques have changed, however, and for those such as conventional electron sources, the earlier volumes still provide a useful resource to the research community. By carefully selecting the topics for the present volumes, Barry Dunning and Randy Hulet have provided us with a coherent description of the methods by which atomic, molecular, and optical physics is practiced today. The electromagnetic theory is the most important theory in physics, first because the electromagnetic force is the only force that can be easily manipulated by man with wellknown applications, secondly an extension of this theory in the future may explain all the fundamental forces known to day in nature. A large volume of literature has appeared since the latter days of World war II, written by researchers expanding the basic principles of electromagnetic theory and applying Maxwell's equations to many important practical problems. However, it is my opinion that the electromagnetic theory is not complete and fully understood. A simple example proven these claims is given in this book when the Helmholtz theorem is analyzed. We proved from a mathematical point of view that Maxwell's equations are not complete since a scalar polarization must be taken into account in the equations.
