Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) can help to increase safety and comfort 4 on the road'. As an element for active, i.e., preventive safety, these VANETs can efficiently warn and inform drivers via direct wireless inter-vehicle communications. Thereby, the range of awareness of a driver is extended from current line-of-sight to the radio range of a wireless transceiver. With multi-hop communication, each vehicle can benefit from the locally sensed data of surrounding vehicles or from multi-hop access opportunities. Clearly, sensing, disseminating and retrieving information on the current surrounding shows a potential for improving transport efficiency and comfort. Vehicular ad hoc networks represent a major technological challenge. Safety-related applications require a high degree of reliability and robustness of the communication system. Unfortunately, vehicular scenarios present adverse channel conditions due to the potential high mobility as well as density of nodes and high number of objects able to degrade the quality of a transmitted signal. All applications have to efficiently make use of the scarce bandwidth resource as well. Therefore, efficient and effective medium access control, routing, and data forwarding mechanisms play an essential role. Applications need clever data aggregation strategies to avoid an overload on the wireless medium. |

The dynamical behaviour of civil engineering structures has traditionally been tackled, for design purposes, in an ‘equivalent static’ way, essentially by introducing magnification factors for vertically applied loads and/or by specifying equivalent horizontal loads. Today the availability of software able to deal explicitly with dynamic analysis of realistic structures with many (dynamic) degrees of freedom, as well as the outcome of the valuable research carried out in the various fields included under ‘Dynamics’, make this type of analysis a part of everyday life in the design office. There are also a number of good reasons why dynamical behaviour of buildings, bridges and other structures is now more of a concern for the designer than it used to be 20 or 30 years ago. One reason is that the aforementioned structures currently consist of structural members that are more slender than before, and lighter cladding made of metal and glass or composites rather than of brick walls. |

In the early 1980s, the problem of acidification was acknowledged on a governmental level in the Netherlands as posing a major environmental threat. The concern for damage to forests and ecosystems, and materials and monuments, as well as for acidification of soils and moorland pools stimulated research and policy development. Acid deposition was used as a characterisation of the atmospheric input leading to these effects. As such, wet and dry deposition of acids, and dry deposition of acid precursors as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, were considered. At the same time, the important role of ammonia in the acidification of soils and moorland pools was acknowledged. Ammonia, the most important acid neutralising component in the atmosphere, was shown to be nitrified to an important extent in soil into nitric acid, thereby contributing to acidification. This led to the concept of potential acid deposition, in which the deposition of actual acid (H +) was added to that of potential acid (ammonia + ammonium). Moreover, the role of atmospheric nitrogen input was recognised as a disturbing factor for natural ecosystems and forests growing on poor soils. |
