Business combinations have been a common business transaction since the start of commercial activity. The concept is simple: A business combination is the group acquisition of all of a company’s assets at a single price. Business combinations is a comprehensive term covering all acquisitions of one firm by another. Business combinations can be further categorized as either mergers or consolidations. The term merger applies when an existing company acquires another company and combines that company’s operations with its own. The term consolidation applies when two or more previously separate firms merge into one new, continuing company. Business combinations make headlines not only in the business press but also in the local newspapers of the communities where the participating companies are located. While investors may delight in the price received for their interest, employees become concerned about continued employment, and local citizens worry about a possible relocation of the business. |

Unicellular yeast cells have been traditionally used as models of lower eukaryotic organisms and the study of yeast has made tremendous contributions to our understanding of life and cellular metabolism. In particular, the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the first organism whose entire genome sequence was determined. This has greatly facilitated and expedited our efforts aiming at deciphering functions of the entire genome of approximately 6200 genes. As a consequence, the functionally unknown genes have decreased from two-thirds of the genome in 1994 to less than 40% today. We are confident that in another decade, the functions of the vast majority of yeast genes will be uncovered, with new functions added to previously described genes as well. |

The vacuum interrupter is deceptively simple. A typical cross-section. The contacts are enclosed in a vacuum chamber originally manufactured from glass, but later from a high alumina ceramic. The contacts are closed by a mechanism connected to the moving terminal. The moving terminal is connected to the vacuum chamber by a stainless steel bellows that permits the contacts to open and close while maintaining the vacuum. Typical vacuum levels inside the device are about 10.4 Pa (10.6 mbar). |

The inspiration for this book came from a desire to produce a lavishly illust rated volume on the entire spectrum of amber. The text, of course, should be accurate and informative, but the images should speak for themselves. A high standard for photographs was set by Dieter Schlee at the Museum fur Naturkunde in Stuttgart. These beautiful photographs, which were published in the Stuttgarter Beitrage series, are of wondrous fossil and mineralogical pieces of amber, but the booklets are in German and not easily obtained. When the American Museum of Natural History launched an exhibit on the natural history and artistry of amber, opening in March 1996, it was a prime opportunity to produce such a book, which would be a guide for developing as well as enjoying the exhibit. |

Systems at the surface of the Earth are continually responding to energy inputs derived ultimately from radiation from the Sun or from the radiogenic heat in the interior. These energy inputs drive plate movements and erosion, exposing metastable mineral phases at the Earth’s surface. In addition, these energy fluxes are harvested and transformed by living organisms. As long as these processes persist, chemical disequilibrium at the Earth’s surface will be perpetuated. In addition, as human populations grow, the need to produce food, extract water, and extract energy resources increases. These processes continually contribute to chemical disequilibrium at the Earth surface. We therefore find it necessary to predict how the surface regolith will change in response to anthropogenic processes as well as long-term climatic and tectonic forcings. |

This text deals primarily with the optics of refracting and reflecting planar surfaces in the form of prismatic refracting and reflecting components, and the design, analysis, and applications of these components. Optical prisms consist of multiple planar surfaces, constructed to a specified geometry and formed from optical glass or plastic.
