Movement is a fundamental feature of the world we live in; it is also inextricably linked with time. The measurement of time relies on change - monitoring the swing of a pendulum, perhaps - but conversely, any discussion of the motion of the pendulum must involve the concept of time. Taken together, time and change lead to the idea of rate, the quantity which tells us how much change occurs in a given time. Thus, for example, for our pendulum we might describe rate in terms of the number of swings per minute. Or, to take a familiar example from everyday life, we refer to a rate of change in position as speed and measure it as the distance travelled in a given time

Think of a large ship sailing through the ocean carrying a sack of potatoes in its cargo hold. There is a potato bug, inside one of the potatoes, which is trying to understand the nature of the ocean through which the ship is moving. Sir Arthur Eddington, famous British astronomer, once compared man's search for the mysteries of the universe to the activities of the potato bug in the above example. He might have been right as far as the comparison of dimensions went; but he was completely wrong in spirit. The 'potato bugs' called more respectably astronomers and cosmologists have definitely learnt a lot about the contents and nature of the Cosmos.

This book is a substantially expanded edition of An Introduction to Random Vibrations and Spectral Analysis which now covers wavelet analysis. Basic theory is thoroughly described and illustrated, with a detailed explanation of how discrete wavelet transforms work. Computer algorithms are expalined and supported by examples and set of problems. An appendix lists 10 computer programs for calculating and displaying wavelet transforms.

The idea of having a serious string theory course for undergraduates was first suggested to me by a group of MIT sophomores sometime in May of 200 I. I was teaching Statistical Physics, and I had spent an hour-long recitation explaining how a relativistic string at high energies appears to approach a constant temperature (the Hagedorn temperature). I was intrigued by the idea of a basic string theory course. but it was not immediately clear to me that a useful one could be devised at this level. A few months later, I had a conversation with Marc Kastner, the Physics Department Head. In passing. I told him about the sophomores' request for a string theory course. Kastner's instantaneous and enthusiastic reaction made me consider seriously the idea for the first time. At the end of 200 I. a new course was added to the undergraduate physics curriculum at MIT. In the spring term of 2002 I taught String Theory for Undergraduates for the first time. This book grew out of the lecture notes for that course. When we think about teaching string theory at the undergraduate level the main question is, "Can the material really be explained at this level?" After teaching the subject two times, I am convinced that the answer to the question is a definite yes. Although a complete mastery of string theory requires a graduate-level physics education, the basics of string theory can be well understood with the limited tools acquired in the first two or three years of an undergraduate education.

The subject of underwater acoustic modeling deals with the translation of our physical understanding of sound in the sea into mathematical formulas solvable by computers. This book divides the subject of underwater acoustic modeling into three fundamental aspects: the physical principles used to formulate underwater acoustic models; the mathematical techniques used to translate these principles into computer models; and modeling applications in sonar technology and oceanographic research. The material presented here emphasizes aspects of the ocean as an acoustic medium. It shows mathematicians and physical scientists how to use this information to model the behavior of sound in a spatially complex and temporally variable ocean. This approach diminishes the need for discussions of engineering issues such as transducers, arrays and targets. Aspects of hardware design and modeling in underwater acoustics are discussed in other excellent texts. Recent developments in underwater acoustic modeling have been influenced by changes in global geopolitics. These changes are evidenced by strategic shifts in military priorities as well as by efforts to transfer defense technologies to non-defense applications.

The prevalence of allergic diseases and asthma has increased in recent years. This has stimulated intensive research to understand the pathogenesis of these diseases. Indeed, researchers have provided key insights and new concepts that have also changed therapeutic strategies. Moreover, allergic inflammation has been something of a model that helps to further the understanding of regulatory mechanisms of inflammation in general. Here, I would like to mention just a few examples. Allergy research has contributed significantly to our current knowledge in intracellular and extracellular mechanisms of anergy, immunoglobulin class switching, and maturation of antigen-presenting cells. Moreover, the general role of delayed apoptosis to accumulate inflammatory cells as well as the biological functions of at least some cytokines (e.g., IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, IL-13) would not have been fully elucidated without studying allergic inflammation. Finally, immunotherapy represents the only utilized antigen-specific treatment in humans at the moment and, therefore, the insights obtained here are applicable to other forms of vaccination.

The finite groups of matrices with coefficients in Q generated by reflections, known as Weyl groups, are a fundamental building block in the classification of semisimple complex Lie algebras and Lie groups, as well as semisimple algebraic groups over arbitrary algebraically closed fields. They are also a foundation for many other significant mathematical theories, including braid groups and Hecke algebras. The Weyl groups are particular cases of complex reflection groups, finite groups of matrices with coefficients in a finite abelian extension of Q generated by “pseudo-reflections” (elements whose vector space of fixed points is a hyperplane) — if the coefficients belong to R, then these are the finite Coxeter groups.

The universe is the most wonderful hydrodynamics laboratory imaginable. Every kind of flow we observe in terrestrial environments occurs in the cosmos an a truly grand scale. Supersonic motion, magnetohydrodynamic flows, turbulence of every variety, and instabilities of perplexing richness all present themselves to the alert eye. It is the purpose of this book to introduce these processes to astronomers in the hope that they will find the tools necessary for understanding both their observations and the related theoretical literature. Since the first edition of the book, the expansion in instrumentation – wavelength coverage, spatial resolution, and sensitivity – has been astounding. Interferometric optical spectropolarimetry is now possible, virtually the entire electromagnetic spectrum is avaialble. Not only can we determine velocities and observe structure, we can also get true flux measurements for objects fainter than ever before accessible.

Surfaces are the bounding faces of solids. The interaction of component surface with the working environment results in wear & corrosion. Estimated loss due to wear & corrosion in USA is around $500 billion. Engineered surfaces are the key to the reduction of losses due to wear and corrosion. In the USA, around 9524 establishments (including automotive, aircraft, power and construction industries) depend on engineered surfaces with support from 23,466 industries. Around 65 top academic institutions world-wide are engaged in surface engineering research and teaching. There has been a paradigm shift in surface engineering from age-old electroplating to processes such as vapor phase deposition, diffusion, thermal spray & welding using advanced heat sources like plasma, laser, ion, electron, microwave, solar beams, pulsed arc, pulsed combustion, spark, friction and induction. Metal, ceramic, polymer and composite surfaces are modified by application of heat or thermally assisted coatings with dissimilar materials. In addition to conventional materials it is possible to develop newer coating materials by processes such as RSP (metallic glasses), plasma polymerization (polymers and copolymers) and thermal spray (graded deposits).
