Since 1976, when the first volume in the Lung Biology in Health and Disease series appeared, many have been published on asthma. Actually, asthma has been the dominant topic among the 159 volumes published as of the time of this writing. The first volume related to asthma [Pathophysiology and Pharmacology of the Airways, edited by J. Nadel (1980)] presented what we knew up to that point. Then, in 1987, Drug Therapy for Asthma (edited by J. W. Jenne and S. Murphy) was published. Those who follow the history of the modern approach to asthma will recognize 1987 as the beginning of an extraordinary movement directed toward the conquest of asthma. Indeed, in the United States, public officials, basic and clinical researchers, and voluntary and professional organizations all united, with the goal of alleviating the suffering and the public health burden of this disease. Today there is a worldwide effort to learn more about and combat asthma. Have we been successful? In my opinion, yes! Certainly, the prevalence of this disease is very high, perhaps even increasing, at least in some parts of the world. But it is also true that many patients have their disease under control and are leading normal and productive lives. Just observe all the Olympic medalists who suffer from asthma!

The book is a substantial contribution to the recent academic literature on homicide, at the same time being written in a reader-friendly manner which will help it reach a wider audience, including students of criminology and criminal justice. It is informed throughout by the author’s now considerable research and teaching experience in this area. Her doctoral work was concerned with explanations of different kinds of homicide, especially those committed by men, and she explored and developed theories around the concept of ‘masculinities’ and issues of control. She also considered the extent to which homicide should be regarded as a unique kind of crime, deserving of its own theoretical explanations, or whether it should primarily be regarded as the extreme end of the spectrum of violent behaviour (the death of the victim often being the result of behaviour not initially aimed at killing, and to some extent contingent upon fortune – as it were, the difference between a knife hitting the heart or an arm) and hence explicable in the same ways as serious violence in general. In exploring such questions, she undertook extensive analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data, including details of all cases recorded in England and Wales on the Homicide Index and a considerable number of police files.

Over the last forty years, researchers have made great strides in elucidating the laws of image formation, processing, and understanding by animals, humans, and machines. This book describes the state of knowledge in one subarea of vision, the geometric laws that relate different views of a scene. Geometry, one of the oldest branches of mathematics, is the natural language for describing three-dimensional shapes and spatial relations. Projective geometry, the geometry that best models image formation, provides a unified framework for thinking about many geometric problems relevant to vision. The book formalizes and analyzes the relations between multiple views of a scene from the perspective of various types of geometries. A key feature is that it considers Euclidean and affine geometries as special cases of projective geometry. Images play a prominent role in computer communications. Producers and users of images, in particular three-dimensional images, require a framework for stating and solving problems. The book offers a number of conceptual tools and theoretical results useful for the design of machine vision algorithms. It also illustrates these tools and results with many examples of real applications.

Human life expectancy, in the space of a mere century or so, has become much longer than ever before. This primarily reflects the improved social and physical conditions of living, along with the strengthening of civil institutions; circumstances which, in particular, have greatly diminished childhood deaths from infection and malnutrition. We have thus partially reined in two of the four biblical Horsemen of the Apocalypse: Famine and Pestilence on their black and pale horses, respectively.1 Meanwhile, the other two Horsemen, War and Conquest, still roam menacingly on their red and white steeds. Warfare continues. The recent conflicts in Kosovo, Chechnya and Sierra Leone testify to the destructiveness of modern firepower and the attendant toll in civilian casualties. Conquest persists, albeit mostly in modern commercial guise, reflecting aspects of economic globalisation and deregulated trade.

The air pressure regime and entrained transient airflows established within building drainage and vent systems result from the random discharge of appliances throughout the network, system surcharge or the arrival of pressure transients propagated by events external to the building system itself, and belong to a clearly defined family of unsteady flow phenomena variously described as pressure surge or transient propagation, a grouping that also, historically, includes waterhammer. The air pressure regime is a direct result of the superposition of pressure transients generated as a result of a multiplicity of changes in the system operating condition and wave reflections and transmissions, while the resulting entrained airflow depends fundamentally upon the shear force between the applied water flow and the air within, or drawn into, the network.
