Although the elements tantalum and niobium were discovered more than 200 years ago in the form of oxides, the true beginning of the chemistry of tantalum and niobium was the discovery and investigation of complex fluorotantalates and fluoroniobates of alkali metals. Application of complex fluoride compounds enabled the separation of tantalum and niobium and in fact initiated the development of the industrial production of the metals and their compounds. |

Nuclear reactor physics is the physics of neutron fission chain reacting systems. It encompasses those applications of nuclear physics and radiation transport and interaction with matter that determine the behavior of nuclear reactors. As such, it is both an applied physics discipline and the core discipline of the field of nuclear engineering. As a distinct applied physics discipline, nuclear reactor physics originated in the middle of the twentieth century in the wartime convergence of international physics efforts in the Manhattan Project. It developed vigorously for roughly the next third of the century in various government, industrial, and university R&D and design efforts worldwide. Nuclear reactor physics is now a relatively mature discipline, in that the basic physical principles governing the behavior of nuclear reactors are well understood, most of the basic nuclear data needed for nuclear reactor analysis have been measured and evaluated, and the computational methodology is highly developed and validated. |

In the context of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), modeling low-pressure subcooled boiling flow is of particular significance. A review is provided in this article of the various numerical modeling approaches that have been adopted to handle subcooled boiling flow. The main focus in the analysis of such a challenging problem can be broadly classified according into two important categories: (i) Heat transfer and wall heat flux partitioning during subcooled boiling flow at the heated wall and (ii) Two-phase flow and bubble behaviors in the bulk subcooled flow away from the heated wall. For the first category, details of both empirical and mechanistic models that have been proposed in the literature are given. The enhancement in heat transfer during forced convective boiling attributed by the presence of both sliding and stationary bubbles, force balance model for bubble departure and bubble lift-off as well as the evaluation of bubble frequency based on fundamental theory depict the many improvements that have been introduced to the current mechanistic model of heat transfer and wall heat flux partitioning. |

A few years ago, a bold graduate student in communication, Jack Sargent (now a faculty member and contributor to this book) asked me, and several other experienced researchers who study nonverbal behavior, to be part of a conference panel. At that time, Jack was interested in doing a study that used coding and rating techniques to measure nonverbal cues, and he could not find a current published source to help him. So he gathered us together in Denver, Colorado, and asked us a series of questions. It was useful for Jack but also for those of us on the panel—and hopefully for the audience as well. All of us realized that much of the work we had been doing involved creating and re-creating measures to assess the aspects of nonverbal behavior in which we were most interested. We all concurred that having a more cohesive discussion of research choices specifically for the investigation of nonverbal phenomena seemed important. That is the primary aim of this book. |

Working in the field contributes a crucial element to our knowledge and understanding of Earth processes, whether it is the prediction of volcanic eruptions, understanding periods of past climate change recorded in sedimentary deposits, deciphering an episode of mountain building, or working out where to fi nd mineral resources. Geological fi eldwork can be both fun and challenging. It provides the chance to work outdoors under a range of conditions and to explore our natural world. It also provides an often unparalleled opportunity to travel and visit localities as more than a tourist. Indeed it often takes you to unspoilt parts of the world that tourists rarely penetrate. Almost all fi eldwork enables us to work as part of a team, often with international partners, and this can be one of the most rewarding experiences of being a geologist because we can learn from each other. |

The past few decades have witnessed a dramatic increase in the diversity of mushrooms gracing the tables of our restaurants and the shelves of our supermarkets. While the increased consumption has consisted primarily of cultivated varieties of Asian origin, there has also been an upsurge of interest in mushrooms that can be obtained only from the wild. The book, written by Ian Hall, Peter Buchanan, Wang Yun, and Tony Cole, covered the most important edible and poisonous mushrooms that Australians and New Zealanders might encounter in the wild, as well as the edible mushrooms that could be purchased in supermarkets. The original authors were joined by Steve Stephenson, a mycologist from the United States, and their combined efforts produced this new book. Whereas the first book mentioned or illustrated about 205 taxa, this book treats about 280 taxa, and many taxa only mentioned or illustrated in the first book are now discussed. The resulting reference is truly international in its coverage and will appeal to enthusiasts from around the world. |

I have personally been involved in environmental remediation projects for half a century and am still going strong. In some regards it was easier decades ago when there were few proven options for the wide variety of chemical contaminants that plagued our waters, soil, and air.
