In Light Detectors, Photoreceptors, and Imaging Systems in Nature, I explore some of the many ways light is intimately linked with life. Light is necessary for photosynthesis and vision, as well as the photobehavior of plants and animals. The reception of light is important to our health and well-being. Various wavelengths of light are being used as a tool for diagnosing diseases and to restore health. Therefore, I begin with the physical properties of light and the electromagnetic spectrum of energies, including the solar spectrum that reaches the Earth, which spans the ultraviolet, the visible, and the infrared—wavelengths from near 200 nm to about 950 nm. The effective energies for biological photoprocesses are generally limited to the visible wavelengths from around 340 nm to 780 nm. Many of the photobiological phenomena that are discussed in this book occur within these wavelengths and center around 500 nm, the solar energy peak in the blue-green. |

Prefaces are very difficult to write and, like many authors, I tend to leave their composition until the last possible moment. I always hope, in vain, that inspiration will strike and that I shall be able to give some novel twist to what is customarily a dry recital of all the people who have in any way contributed to a work but who are in no way responsible for its shortcomings. Of course, I should greatly prefer to be able to blame my shortcomings upon others but, although this book has been decades in the making, on the whole I have worked by myself, in my own way, and at my own tempo. There are thus only a few individuals I should like to mention: but they have, in various ways, been important to me. One particular debt is to the late Nicolai Rubinstein who, over many years, never failed to stir my conscience at the tardy progress of this book and never failed to encourage me to bestir myself. I bitterly regret that he did not live to see the finished work, but hope that his many surviving friends and pupils will not think it unworthy of his memory. |

In the autumn of 1978, after I had completed the manuscript of the Japanese book Fundamentals and applications of stepping motors in collaboration with Y. Niimura, T visited Professor P. J. Lawrenson and Dr A. Hughes at the University of Leeds. I contributed one chapter of the book on the explanation of the theory of static and dynamic characteristics of stepping motors which had been developed by them and their co-workers. T told them that the small precision electrical motor industry in Japan had progressed at a spectacular pace since the early 1970s and that the book would be read by many engineers and students. Professor Lawrenson asked me if I had thought about writing its English version, and T replied 'I will consider it after the Japanese version has appeared'. It was this discussion that first inspired me to write this book. |

At this writing the Cassini spacecraft has fired its engine and successfully inserted itself and its precious cargo of scientific instruments into orbit, the first step of its exploration of the Saturnian system. The suspense is not over, however. While exciting images of the rings have been captured, an exotic composition of Phoebe sensed by the mapping spectrometer and unexpected panoply of magnetic waves and plasma dynamics encountered on the incoming trajectory and initial orbit, the Huygens probe is still on board and the first close flyby of Titan has not taken place. Not until Christmas Day will the probe be released. Navigators are still checking their calculations,worrying about known unknowns like the mass of Saturn’s moons that could cause ever so small a deviation from the planned trajectory of the probe. |

Strikes have been part of American labor relations from colonial days to the present, reflecting the widespread class conflict that has run throughout the nation's history. Spectacular industrial accidents, such as the ones in Bhopal, Mexico City and Basle, have in recent times made the risks associated with the modern chemicals industry unmistakably evident. An analysis of events showed that when on-site safety precautions fail effective emergency plans for the people living in the vicinity of an installation become particularly important. Emergency plans can be a matter of life and death. For quite some time now they have been part of a comprehensive system to protect areas in the vicinity of hazardous industrial installations from the harmful effects which can result from a major accident. The most important elements of this system were laid down in the ‘Regulation on major industrial accidents’ (Storfallverordnung; a regulation which implements on a national level the EEC Directive 82/501/EEC, the Seveso Directive) which will be briefly described here. |

Cardiac surgery has undergone major changes in the recent past. With changes came new knowledge, technology and progress, all aimed at providing better care to our patients.
