The radiation range of photon energy comprised between, let us say, 20 eV and 600 eV is known by the names of extreme ultraviolet, soft X-ray or XUV radiation. This fluctuating designation reflects the various origins of a radiation pattern which, in other respects, exhibits singular optical properties marking it off from far-ultraviolet, on one side, and X-rays, on the other. The penetration length of XUV radiation is very small in almost all materials—generally less than 1 ?m. There is practically no reflection on optical surfaces under normal incidence and, in addition, wavelength is too large to make use of Bragg reflection on natural crystals. These peculiarities made the development of instrumentation for XUV studies more difficult than for others spectral fields, a fact which has been prejudicial to the advance of XUV research. During the last decades important progress, especially in XUV optics, became possible with the help of synchrotron radiation sources. |

The idea for this book was born in early 2001. I was preparing for an IEEE workshop on the subject of optical switching. It was the second in a series of annual optical networking workshops I have developed for the two flagship conferences of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), namely the International Conference on Communications (ICC) and the Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM). The call for participation was circulating when Alex Greene, then Senior Publisher with Kluwer Academic Publishers, saw it and called me to ask if I would be interested in editing or authoring a book on optical switching. I met Alex afterwards in March 2001 at the Optical Fiber Communications Conference (OFC) in Anaheim, California, where we discussed this idea further. The task was big and challenging. Nevertheless, the motivation to pursue this project, for a scientist interested in optical switching, was also strong. |

In all, the European Space Agency (ESA) has developed 60 spacecrafts over the last few decades. The book offered to your attention, is dedicated to unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV). The UUV family is known to have two separate branches: the Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV). Each branch has its advantages and limitations, and specific tasks. The difference between AUVs and ROVs is that AUVs employ “intelligence”, such as sensing and automatic decision making. They have predefined plan of operations in its “mind” allowing them to perform tasks autonomously. ROVs are controlled remotely by a human with the help of communication links on the basis of tether (cable, fiber optic, etc). However, the application of AUV technology to ROVs (transformation them into “smart” ROVs) is decreasing the differences between the branches. Originally there was the word "intelligent" at the book's title, which as it seems to me, correctly reveals tendencies of UUVs evolution. So, AUVs are the main theme of the most articles included in the book. |

The 1989 Southeast Conference on Public Administration (SECOPA) was held in Clearwater Beach, Florida. Many members assumed that the location would make this SECOPA a big draw, and, not disappointing, many of the leaders of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) and many prominent thinkers in budgeting and other areas of public administration were featured participants. Since ancient times, earthquakes have taken a heavy toll on human life and property, made worse on a psychological level by the unexpected nature of the event. Mitigation of the damage caused by earthquakes is a prime requirement in many parts of the world today. As part of the design process, assessment of seismic loading is of fundamental importance and is the key step before any building design activity can be undertaken. Generally this also requires the assessment of an appropriate structural loading. Much effort has been devoted in the last fifty years towards understanding the causes of earthquakes and defining the loading on buildings associated with such events. Great advances have been made in the field of plate tectonics followed by developments in geotechnical engineering and soil mechanics. Though much remains to be followed up and quantified, understanding in these areas has reached a stage where the findings and procedures may now be integrated into a rational determination of ‘earthquake loadings’ for the design of structures. |

Four years ago, the European Community project LIRES (Development of Light Water Reactor Reference Electrodes) was started with the objec- tive of developing high temperature reference electrodes for light water reactors (LWRs). To conclude this research project, a one-day seminar was organized with the topic: ‘High Temperature Electrochemistry in Light Water Reactors’ (EFC event No. 279, 30 November 2004, KU Leuven, Belgium). The objective of the seminar was to give an overview of the developments of electrochemical methods and techniques for use in high temperature, high pressure aqueous environments in Europe and to focus on their application to LWRs. This volume publishes the fruits of all the technical and scientifi c discussions which occurred during the friendly one- day seminar, including a selection of papers presented during this seminar and papers presented during EUROCORR conferences. These papers have been brought together as they all concern corrosion problems in LWRs, attempting to solve them using electrochemical methods. |
