This book is the brainchild of the fourth Optoelectronic and Photonic Winter School on “Biophotonics” which took place from 25th February 2007 to 3rd March 2007 in Sardagna, a small village on the mountains around Trento in Italy. This school, held every two years, have been promoted to trace the very fast developing technologies and the tremendous progress in photonics which have occurred and will occur in the near future. Of course such a book as we propose here is not the product of just two people working together, although the experience has been a great pleasure for us. This book is the result of a discovery made in the midst of conversation about the sudden academic interest in identity politics. We came to realize that we shared a perception, best expressed in the form of an injunction: forget the endless talk of difference, note that everyone is saying the same thing! In other words, the fact that anxiety about culture war is shared is itself evidence of the continuing homogeneity of American life. Our skepticism about the supposedly broken state of the union reflects our backgrounds. As an American anthropologist who has worked on the Middle East and done research on charismatic social movements and a comparative historical sociologist familiar with Northern Ireland and the post-communist world, we are all too familiar with societies genuinely torn by violent disorders. The United States is not such a society.1 However, we seek to go beyond skepticism to offer and account of the manner in which America has come to be held together, and to weigh the positive and negative aspects of that unity. |

Risk management has truly undergone a revolution in the last decade. It was just over 10 years ago, in July 1993, that the Group of 30 (G-30) officially promulgated best practices for the management of derivatives.1 Even though the G-30 issued its report in response to the string of derivatives disasters of the early 1990s, these best practices apply to all financial instruments, not only derivatives. This was the first time the term ‘Value-at-Risk’ (VaR) was publicly and widely mentioned. By now, VaR has become the standard benchmark for measuring financial risk. All major banks dutifully report their VaR in quarterly or annual financial reports. |

The use of infrasound to monitor the atmosphere has, like infrasound itself, gone largely unheard of through the years. But it has many applications, and it is about time that a book is being devoted to this fascinating subject. Our own involvement with infrasound occurred as graduate students of Prof. William Donn, who had established an infrasound array at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory (now the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) of Columbia University. It was a natural outgrowth of another major activity at Lamont, using seismic waves to explore the Earth’s interior. Both the atmosphere and the solid Earth feature velocity (seismic or acoustic) gradients in the vertical which act to refract the respective waves. The refraction in turn allows one to calculate the respective background structure in these mediums, indirectly exploring locations that are hard to observe otherwise. Monitoring these signals also allows one to discover various phenomena, both natural and man-made (some of which have military applications). |

Since the dawn of the atomic age in 1942 with the first controlled, self-sustaining chain reaction of radioactive material, there has been considerable controversy over the desirability of splitting the atom. On the one hand, nuclear energy unleashed the creation of a terrible weapon of mass destruction. On the other hand, the promise of an endless supply of a relatively affordable and reliable source of electricity gave the promise of a new era in energy production. While commercial nuclear power has proved to be a reliable source of electricity that does not create air pollution or contribute to global warming, it does generate highly radioactive waste that will be lethal for thousands of years. While the problem of nuclear waste was first recognized in the early 1950s, it was generally accepted that it was not a serious concern at the time, and any decision on what to do with the waste could be postponed to a later date. |
