The origin of the present monograph was a kind suggestion by Professor G.Temple that I should present the results of the work of my group at the l{oyal Institute of Technology in the course of past years. My own work on the mechanics of creep of solids dates back to the early 1930s. The work was intensified only in the 1950s when it was stimulated by the urgent needs of designers and computing engineers dealing with high-temperature machinery, jet engines, and high-velocity aeronautics. This state of affairs is still persisting and constitutes a constant stimulus to this kind of work.

A genuine need existed for an updated foundation engineering handbook that incorporates, in addition to classical principles of foundation designs, significant contributions made to the art of foundation design by practitioners and researchers during the last two decades. As the authors of Distant Speech Recognition note, automatic speech recognition is the key enabling technology that will permit natural interaction between humans and intelligent machines. Core speech recognition technology has developed over the past decade in domains such as office dictation and interactive voice response systems to the point that it is now commonplace for customers to encounter automated speech-based intelligent agents that handle at least the initial part of a user query for airline flight information, technical support, ticketing services, etc. While these limited-domain applications have been reasonably successful in reducing the costs associated with handling telephone inquiries, their fragility with respect to acoustical variability is illustrated by the difficulties that are experienced when users interact with the systems using speakerphone input. As time goes by, we will come to expect the range of natural human-machine dialog to grow to include seamless and productive interactions in contexts such as humanoid robotic butlers in our living rooms, information kiosks in large and reverberant public spaces, as well as intelligent agents in automobiles while traveling at highway speeds in the presence of multiple sources of noise. Nevertheless, this vision cannot be fulfilled until we are able to overcome the shortcomings of present speech recognition technology that are observed when speech is recorded at a distance from the speaker.

Globally, there are more than 1 billion obese people and another 800 million are chronically undernourished. Nearly 30,000 (half of them children) die everyday from malnutrition. In more affluent nations, these problems are exacerbated by eating disorders and food insecurity. In the United States, as many as 10 million females and 1 million males have an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. Approximately 25 million more have binge eating disorder. An estimated 35.1 million people live in households deemed food insecure and 10.8 million are considered food insecure with hunger. These problems stem from the interplay of political, economic, agricultural, nutritional, psychological, physiological, and social forces. Of course, each of these areas is also multifaceted, but all intersect on one key point: all influence ingestive behavior (when, where, what, and how much we choose to eat). As a result, expertise in each of these areas must be brought to bear on the problem of malnutrition (i.e., under- and overnutrition). This book focuses on the psychological and biological determinants of feeding, the governing influences when food availability is not limiting.

The thermodynamic properties of fluids are vital information for design, operation (including safety considerations) and maintenance in the fluid processing or continuous manufacturing industries.
