Some might consider the task of producing an encyclopedia for an emerging field of study a foolish, if not futile, undertaking. From time to time over the course of preparing this work, I did indeed feel this to be true. Time has won out, and this work represents a first of its kind in attempting to provide an overview of philanthropy as well as of the nonprofit, voluntary, independent, or third sector (terms all used interchangeably) in the United States. Philanthropic and nonprofit studies have enjoyed a major growth spurt over the past twenty-five years in the United States, with recent increased attention around the globe. However, some still see the field as a marginal academic enterprise.With substantial contributions by many scholars in various disciplines and professional fields, philanthropic and nonprofit studies programs have given students and teachers alike a fresh perspective on critical issues in our society. |

The OSCE Code of Conduct on Politico-Military Aspects of Security occupies a fundamental place among the body of commitments developed within the politico-military dimension of the OSCE. The Code addresses an area of state power which has hitherto been considered a sanctum sanctorum – the armed forces and the security sector at large, which it subjects to the principles and rules of democratic governance. As such, it has no real counterpart in a global or regional security organization. Although the Code is far from technically and substantially perfect, it has proven to be a vital instrument, which is being used as a reference tool by European and Euro-Atlantic organizations other than the OSCE. Against this background, the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) commissioned the OSCE Cluster of Competence at the Graduate Institute for International Studies, Geneva, to carry out a research project on the Code, including a paragraph-by-paragraph commentary on the politically binding document, as well as an assessment of the Code’s implementation based on an analysis of the established procedures of information exchange. |

Econometrics seemed to me a technically demanding subject with results that are either magic (stated without derivation) or based on some arcane mathematical tricks. But after reading Ruud's textbook, econometrics finally makes sense. It provides a great exposition of graduate econometrics with all the main results and techniques clearly spelled out. Furthermore, it actually has derivations of the results. I also really like the emphasis on the geometry behind econometrics; it provides a systematic approach and the results even become intuitive. |

Lithography, the fundamental fabrication process of semiconductor devices, is playing a critical role in micro- and nano-fabrications and the revolution in high density integrated circuits. Traditional optical lithography (photolithography) including contact and project photolithography has contributed significantly to the semiconductor device advancements. As the resolution requirement increases for fabrication of finer and smaller components and devices, the technological dependence on photolithography becomes a serious problem since the photolithography resolution is restricted by the diffraction limitation of optics. Reducing the light wavelength from blue to near ultraviolet (UV) and to deep UV is expected to improve the photolithography resolution, but it is far not enough to catch up with the pace in resolution demand in integrated circuit fabrication. |

If Maurice Jacob states "La physique est une science experimentale", this stands as a fact and does not need any proof. If, however, T.D.Lee says "We all know that the basis of physics is experiment", this does need a proof. It not only states the fact, but also claims that the fact is known to all of us. This is much more and not always obvious. The proof refers to old Archimed shown in [2] on a sixteenth-century wood engraving (Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris) as sitting in a barrel of water and being described as "erster erfinder scharpffsinniger vergleichung ". Who can afford not to know about the bath of Archimed, so indeed we all know! Lee then continues by postulating two laws of physicists, T.D. Lee's first law of physicists: "Without experimentalists, theorists tend to drift." T.D. Lee's second law of physicists: "Without theorists, experimentalists tend to falter". |

Nothing is more exciting to a scientist than realizing that his/her areas of expertise are developing and that the state-of-the-knowledge yesterday is outdated today. The distinguished philosopher Ernst Mach first reported the phenomenon of shock wave reflection over 125 years ago in 1878. The study of this fascinating phenomenon was then abandoned for a period of about 60 years until Professors John von Neumann and Bleakney initiated its investigation in the early 1940s. Under their supervision, 15 years of intensive research related to various aspects of the reflection of shock waves in pseudosteady flows were carried out. It was during this period that the four basic shock wave reflection configurations, regular, single-Mach, transitional-Mach and double-Mach reflections, were discovered. Then, for a period of about 10 years from the mid-1950s until the mid-1960s, the investigation of the reflection phenomenon of shock waves was kept on a low flame all over the world (e.g. Australia, Japan, Canada, USA, USSR, etc.) until Professor Tatyana Bazhenova from the USSR, Professor Irvine Israel Glass from Canada, and Professor Roy Henderson from Australia re-initiated the study of this and related phenomena. |

Embedded SRAMs now dominate CMOS computing chips taking well over half of the total transistor count of high performance ICs. This dominance forces designers to minimize the SRAM layout area imposing a tight transistor density. This transistor circuit density presents two challenges for the test. The first is that virtually all areas of the cells are active and sensitive to particle-related defects. Secondly, parasitic coupling between cells is a major concern.
