Diseases of the central nervous system can have unexpected effects on a person. Physicians have learned about the way the brain works by studying patients with central nervous system damage. The most common studies about brain function investigated the effects of strokes on behavior and movement. Stroke involves an interuption of blood flow to specific regions of the brain. Studies of stroke victims revealed that the ability to recognize an object is divided up among various regions of the brain. For example, the memory of seeing an apple is stored in a different part of brain from the memories of hearing the word apple, spelling the word apple, and tasting an apple. Strokes to a small region of the brain could cause a person to know the word apple and even be aware of the fruit’s taste without being able to visualize an apple. Studies of people with the degenerative brain disorder Alzheimer’s disease revealed that the condition causes people to lose specific memories while other memories remain intact. Investigating the effects of spinal cord injuries and infectious diseases such as encephalitis and meningitis has also contributed to our knowledge of brain function. Immune system chemicals that disrupt neuron communication cause the hallucinations—illusions of feeling, hearing, or seeing something that does not exist—that result from many types of meningitis. It is believed that too much or too little stimulation to nerves creates hallucinations. |

Oxygen is a dangerous friend. Overwhelming evidence indicates that oxidative stress can lead to cell and tissue injury. However, the same free radicals that are generated during oxidative stress are produced during normal metabolism and thus are involved in both human health and disease. Normal metabolism is dependent upon oxgyen, a free radical. Through evolution, oxygen was chosen as the terminal electron acceptor for respiration. The two unpaired electrons of oxygen spin in the same direction; thus, oxygen is a biradical, but is not a very dangerous free radical. Other oxygen-derived free radical species, such as superoxide or hydroxyl radicals, formed during metabolism or by ionizing radiation are stronger oxidants and are therefore more dangerous. |

DarkBASIC was something I wanted as much for myself as anyone else. I had done no serious marketing, no advertising, and I was still learning the ropes. I was not at all sure anyone else would give it a second glance. I did not have much money, so I used every form of free advertising I could find. Website links, search engine submissions, magazine demos, and anything else that would spread the word. The website I designed and maintained myself, the orders were processed by a shareware company, the CDs were duplicated individually and labeled by hand. It was very much a cottage industry. In the years that followed, DarkBASIC Software Ltd got bigger. I took on a commercial director, then an artist, then another project. That project took on seven more artists, two musicians, and several consultants. All the while DarkBASIC the language got bigger. |

In 1918, cities and towns across the United States were under quarantine. The country, and most of the world, was living in fear of an invisible enemy that was rumored to destroy everything in its path. Brevig, Alaska was one such town. Brevig’s 80 citizens did not leave the town for fear of encountering the enemy, and outsiders were not allowed in the small town for fear that they may bring the enemy with them. Despite all of Brevig’s fear and efforts to quarantine the townspeople, the enemy did find its way inside the town. A cargo ship was allowed to dock on Alaska’s shores after it was mistakenly determined to be free of harm. Among the ship’s cargo was a bag of letters for the citizens of Brevig and a few other Alaskan towns. The local letter carrier picked up the bag with his dogsled team shortly after the ship docked at the port. Soon after, the carrier began his journey to deliver the letters to the nearby towns. The morning that the man began his carrier route, he was not sick, but he rapidly became ill during his journey. The disease that caused his sickness was the enemy that held the world hostage and it rapidly attacked his lungs. |
