The series ‘The Chemistry of Functional Groups’ was originally planned to cover in each volume all aspects of the chemistry of one of the important functional groups in organic chemistry. The emphasis is laid on the preparation, properties and reactions of the functional group treated and on the effects which it exerts both in the immediate vicinity of the group in question and in the whole molecule. A voluntary restriction on the treatment of the various functional groups in these volumes is that material included in easily and generally available secondary or tertiary sources, such as Chemical Reviews, Quarterly Reviews, Organic Reactions, various ‘Advances’ and ‘Progress’ series and in textbooks (i.e. in books which are usually found in the chemical libraries of most universities and research institutes), should not, as a rule, be repeated in detail, unless it is necessary for the balanced treatment of the topic. Therefore each of the authors is asked not to give an encyclopaedic coverage of his subject, but to concentrate on the most important recent developments and mainly on material that has not been adequately covered by reviews or other secondary sources by the time of writing of the chapter, and to address himself to a reader who is assumed to be at a fairly advanced postgraduate level. |

This book deals with small-signal audio design: the amplification and control of audio in the analog domain, where the clever stuff is done with op-amps or discrete transistors, usually working at a nominal level of a volt or less. ‘Small-signal design’ is the opposite term to the large-signal technology used in power amplifiers, welding gear, and the electricity distribution grid. Audio signals frequently need to be manipulated, by altering their level, frequency response, routing and so on. It is obviously much more economical to perform these functions on a small signal, rather than a large signal that has already been amplified up to loudspeaker level, and so has tens of volts and several amps to its name. |

This is a book on fluid dynamics. It is not a book on computation. Many excellent books on fluid dynamics are available: why is another needed? In recent decades, numerical algorithms and computer power have advanced to the point that computer simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations have become routine. This vastly expands our ability to solve these equations, further extending our understanding of fluid flow and providing a tool for engineering analysis. Computer simulations are solutions of a different nature from classical exact and approximate solutions. They are numerical data rather than formulas. One of our objectives in this text is to relate computer solutions to theoretical fluid dynamics. Indeed, it is this goal, rather than computation as a tool for complex engineering analysis, that provides the guideline for this text. Computer solutions can reproduce closed-form and approximate solutions; they can illuminate the merits and limits of simple analyses; and they can provide entirely new solutions of varying degrees of complexity. The time is ripe to integrate computer solutions into fluid dynamics education. |

Layout generation is an important topic in IC design. For digital circuits a lot of research has been conducted in this area, resulting in a large variety of books and layout generation tools. However, with the ever increasing frequencies, we are facing now significant analog types of artifacts in the IC, introduced during the physical design phase, when schematics are translated to physical ICs via a layout. Moreover, with the trend to systems on chip, analog circuitry and massive amounts of digital circuitry are going to be integrated on the same chip, now called a mixed-signal chip. Compatibility between the high-resolution but low-level analog signals and the relatively large-swing digital signals with their fast transition edges is becoming a severe problem, which makes layout generation a tedious and complex job. |
