The more or less standard American (and other) curriculum for college and university students in mathematics and related fields (computer science, physics, engineering, etc.) includes courses on Basic Linear Algebra, and Calculus and Analytical Geometry in the first year. In particular, such courses provide the student with a first knowledge on vectors and coordinates, as well as a superficial acquaintance with conic sections and quadrics. Later on, those who develop an interest in Geometry may take second courses in this field and, mainly, such second courses will discuss axiomatic and non-Euclidean geometry. (Though false, sometimes the word geometry is not even mentioned in these courses, I refer to the analytical geometry part of the first year curriculum as a first course in geometry).

Location is a quantity which is so fundamental that it forms part of the gestalt of every human being. Everyone has an instinctive sense of what is meant by location, and yet if you were to ask for a definition of the term you might be surprised by the varied responses it would elicit. Ask somebody "Where are you now?" and you will get responses ranging from "I'm at home," "I'm in the car," "I'm at 27 Homebay Drive, Watsonia,"-or going to the extreme of subjectivity: "I'm in a state of confusion." In very rare circumstances, somebody may actually reply "I'm 32 degrees south latitude and 150 degrees east longitude…." All of the preceding are potentially correct and are expected responses, depending completely on the context within which the questions were asked. But in discussing location in this book, at least some refinement of the term is needed.

Since the third edition of this book was published in 1988 there have been no startling changes in the materials used for the construction of swimming pools. A similar comment can be made about the design of reinforced concrete swimming pool shells. The number of swimming pools has continued to increase both in the public and private sectors. This is particularly so with private club leisure centres which offer a wide range of activities. There has been significant developments in the field of National Specifications and Code of Practice relating to construction due to the intensive work on the preparation of Euro Standards and Codes and the issue of Directives from the EEC. The latter set out minimum quality standards for a wide range of constructional materials, and establish the responsibility of suppliers and designers.

There are some issues in human paleontology that seem to be timeless. Most deal with the origin and early evolution of our own genus – something about which we should care. Some of these issues pertain to taxonomy and systematics. How many species of Homo were there in the Pliocene and Pleistocene? How do we identify the earliest members the genus Homo? If there is more than one Plio-Pleistocene species, how do they relate to one another, and where and when did they evolve? Other issues relate to questions about body size, proportions and the functional adaptations of the locomotor skeleton. When did the human postcranial “Bauplan” evolve, and for what reasons? What behaviors (and what behavioral limitations) can be inferred from the postcranial bones that have been attributed to Homo habilis and Homo erectus? Still other issues relate to growth, development and life history strategies, and the biological and archeological evidence for diet and behavior in early Homo. It is often argued that dietary change played an important role in the origin and early evolution of our genus, with stone tools opening up scavenging and hunting opportunities that would have added meat protein to the diet of Homo. Still other issues relate to the environmental and climatic context in which this genus evolved.

As in former editions of this book, I have expanded the present one to contain new sections on subjects beyond those found in the previous editions, thereby filling some of the existing gaps. Thus, we now have a section on heavy quark effective theories, one of the more powerful methods devised to take advantage of the existence a large scale (the mass of the heavy quark) for observables involving at least a heavy quark; a new section on lattice QCD, a method of calculation that is already giving reasonably reliable results for a number of observables; and several sections with a detailed discussion of chiral perturbation theory. There is little doubt that, at least at the one loop level, chiral perturbation theory has led to an important insight into pion physics in a region where methods derived from ordinary perturbation theory are not at applicable, which justifies this substantial addition. Besides this, I have corrected errors in the previous edition and improved, here and there, the material on several among the various topics; in particular, including more information on experiment, and on comparison of theory with experiment. The values of the basic QCD parameters have also been completely updated.

For over a hundred years from its conception, the lead–acid cell was normally operated with unrestricted access between the surface of its electrolyte and the external atmosphere so that, during periods of overcharge, hydrogen and oxygen were lost from the cell via electrolysis. As a result, periodic additions of distilled water were necessary. Since about 1970, an alternative to the traditional ‘flooded’ cell has been available —one that avoids the need for water maintenance. Moreover, acid is immobilized in the new design and this endows the cell with the additional advantages of being ‘spill-proof’ and able to operate in any orientation (upright, on its side, or even upside down). The change to the so-called ‘valve-regulated lead–acid’ (VRLA) technology has not, however, been accomplished without some difficulty. Experience has demonstrated forcibly the fundamental differences between the two systems, and the lead– acid battery manufacturing industry has faced major challenges in investing the VRLA version with a performance to match that of its flooded predecessor. Nevertheless, research into understanding the electrochemisty, producing improved cell components and optimizing charge strategies has resulted in VRLA batteries becoming well-established and reliable devices. Operators now take advantage of the particular properties of these batteries for the storage of electrical energy in a wide variety of stationary applications.

Earthquake dynamics is one of the most pluridisciplinary endeavors in Earth Science, encompassing most disciplines in Geology, Geophysics, Rock Mechanics, and Fracture Mechanics. These studies range from field observations of faults and seismic ruptures through experimental rupture mechanics, fracture mechanics, and seismic radiation from earthquake faulting. Such a broad field attracts researchers from many horizons, using different scientific approaches and diverse technical experiences. The collection of papers selected by Eiichi Fukuyama and his colleagues is a very ample cross-section of these different approaches, ranging from field observations of faulting— both recent and old—to the most advanced techniques for simulating seismic ruptures in the laboratory and in computers, as well as the use of seismic data to constrain these models. These different approaches are required in order to understand and eventually use this information for the scientific prediction of ground motion and, perhaps one day, predicting earthquakes.

UV-exposuie represents the most important risk factor for the development of nonmelanoma skin cancer. Additionally, assessment of sun exposure parameters has consistently shown an association between the development of malignant melanoma and short-term, intense UV-exposure, particularly burning in childhood. As a consequence, protection of the skin from UV-exposure is an integral part of skin cancer prevention programs. However, more chronic, less intense UV-exposure has not been found to be a risk factor for melanoma and in fact has been found in some studies to be protective. Moreover, 90% of all requisite vitamin D is formed within the skin through the action of the sun—a serious problem—for a connection between vitamin D deficiency and various types of cancer (e.g., colon, prostate and breast cancers) has been demonstrated in a large number of studies. Hence, the association between vitamin D deficiency and various internal malignancies has now opened a debate among dermatologists and other clinicians how to balance between positive and negative effects of solar and artificial UV-exposure.
