Since Selman Waksman’s discovery of streptomycin in 1944, aminoglycosides have been at the forefront of antibacterial drug treatment. Advances in carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry, coupled with other technological advances in nucleic acid synthesis, biochemistry and structure analysis have led to a substantial increase in aminoglycoside research among both chemists and biochemists. Liposomes, also called lipid vesicles or simply vesicles, are suprainolecular assemblies of amphiphiles, surface active substances, that normally contain two hydrophobic tails and one hydrophilic head group. The investigation of vesicles belongs to the field ofsupramolecular chemistry. Due to the large size, giant vesicles are particularly attractive to investigate because their formation and the behaviour of one single supramolecular entity can be observed by light microscopy. Thc size of giant vesicles is typically in the range lO-lOOpm, corresponding to an amphiphile aggregation number of typically 8 x lo8-8 x 10’” per vesicle.

This book reviews the importance and new opportunities for piezoelectric ceramics; to achieve it, it is necessary to investigate new materials, material combinations, structures, damages and porosity effects. In this context, it is necessary to know the trend analysis and to examine recent developments in different fields of applications. These significant aspects are discussed in the chapters of the book. Chapter 1 reports on novel synthesis techniques for the deposition of Strontium-doped lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric thin films on silicon substrates enabling microfabrication of sensors, actuators and transducers. The thin film deposition was carried out by RF magnetron sputtering, with conditions optimized based on the outcome required – island-structures (650- 700 ?C) or low temperature deposition (300 ?C). Furthermore, it exhibits the characterizations by spectroscopy and high resolution electron microscopy of these coatings. In chapter 2 the behaviors of lead metaniobate piezoceramic multilayer ultrasonic transducers with various adhesive bondlines under dynamic drive and self- heating conditions are studied.
