This book reviews the state of the art as well as current research and recent advances in the use of MRI, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), and nuclear and molecular imaging (MI) for the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis, especially rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). The first section of the book focuses on the clinical state of the art, emphasizing methods that are currently available and in routine clinical use throughout the world; the second portion is forwardlooking and emphasizes new and experimental methods and imaging strategies, including cutting-edge molecular imaging research, which is the topic of the final chapter.

Sixty-five years have passed since the publication of Basil Luyet’s Life and Death at Low Temperature , the first organized attempt to summarize past observations of freezing injury in living organisms and to infer from them the mechanisms of injury. Not surprisingly, attention at that time was focused primarily on mechanical damage from ice, although, as evidence of the immaturity of the science, Luyet considered five other possible mechanisms: the withdrawal of energy, attainment of a minimal temperature, too-rapid thawing, dehydration, and “various physiological, physical, or chemical alterations.” One might have expected that the subsequent years would have led to a clear and functional understanding of freezing injury and, as a result, have enabled efficient cryopreservation of almost anything. But it wasn’t that easy.

This textbook is an introduction to Scientific Computing. We will illustrate several numerical methods for the computer solution of certain classes of mathematical problems that cannot be faced by paper and pencil. We will show how to compute the zeros or the integrals of continuous functions, solve linear systems, approximate functions by polynomials and construct accurate approximations for the solution of differential equations. With this aim, in Chapter 1 we will illustrate the rules of the game that computers adopt when storing and operating with real and complex numbers, vectors and matrices.

Although the use of bioactive natural products as herbal drug preparations dates back hundreds, even thousands, of years ago, their application as isolated and characterized compounds to modern drug discovery and development only started in the 19th century, the dawn of the chemotherapy era. It has been well documented that natural products played critical roles in modern drug development, especially for antibacterial and antitumor agents.1 More importantly, natural products presented scientists with unique chemical structures, which are beyond human imagination most of the time, and inspired scientists to pursue new chemical entities with completely different structures from known drugs. Medicinal chemistry has evolved from the chemistry of bioactive compounds in early days to works at the interface of chemistry and biology nowadays. Medicinal chemistry of bioactive natural products spans a wide range of fields, including isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds from natural sources, structure modification for optimization of their activity and other physical properties, and total and semi-synthesis for a thorough scrutiny of structure activity relationship (SAR). In addition, synthesis of natural products also provides a powerful means in solving supply problems in clinical trails and marketing of the drug, for obtaining natural products in bulk amounts is often very difficult.

Discrete mathematics, the study of finite systems, has become increasingly important as the computer age has advanced. The digital computer is basically a finite structure, and many of its properties can be understood and interpreted within the framework of finite mathematical systems. This book, in presenting the more essential material, may be used as a textbook for a formal course in discrete mathematics or as a supplement to all current texts. The first three chapters cover the standard material on sets, relations, and functions and algorithms. Next come chapters on logic, counting, and probability. We then have three chapters on graph theory: graphs, directed graphs, and binary trees. Finally there are individual chapters on properties of the integers, languages, machines, ordered sets and lattices, and Boolean algebra, and appendices on vectors and matrices, and algebraic systems. The chapter on functions and algorithms includes a discussion of cardinality and countable sets, and complexity. The chapters on graph theory include discussions on planarity, traversability, minimal paths, andWarshall’s and Huffman’s algorithms. We emphasize that the chapters have been written so that the order can be changed without difficulty and without loss of continuity.

The idea for this book started several years ago, when a client claimed he learned more about universe design and development from a single quality assurance review than all the classes he had taken and books he had read. For a consultant, there is no higher compliment. Let me set the record straight, though: I think the vendor training and documentation is excellent. What makes BusinessObjects uniquely challenging, however, is that for business intelligence, it is not enough to know the software; you have to know the business and the business users. In this respect, it's not enough to know how to create a universe object-for example, you have to know why users need objects defined a certain way, how certain SQL settings prevent or enable users to answer a business question. This book is my attempt at bridging what is often the great divide between IT and the business in their quest for better access to information. My hope is that it helps you take your implementation one step further.

Recognition of the biological nature of sulphate reduction in natural environments, and identification of the bacterial species involved dates to the latter part of the nineteenth century, and the seminal work of such giants of the early days of microbiology as Beijerinck andWinogradsky. The central role of environmental studies in highlighting the issues to be addressed and the problems to be solved, has remained to this day a constant theme in microbiological analyses of the sulphate reducers. The modern era of such analyses, however, can be said to date from the period around 1960 when the demonstrations by Postgate and Peck, respectively, of the presence of cytochromes and of phosphorylation linked to anaerobic respiration in sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), fundamentally altered our view of the biochemical nature of these organisms and, in particular, of their mechanisms of energy conservation.

This is an advanced level textbook which grew out of lecture notes for several graduate courses I taught in different places over several years. It assumes that the reader has a background of Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics and Condensed Matter Physics. The methods of Green’s functions, which are standard by now, are used fairly extensively in the book, and a mathematical introduction is included for those not very familiar with them.

For both historical and sentimental reasons, we continue to carry in this new edition the Preface to the first edition originally published twenty years ago. It serves as a reminder of my perception of what I define as “primary religious groups” (replacing the older term denominations), as well as what are the main long-term building blocks of the religious community in a free society. Various kinds of movements, trends, fads, and religious phenomena emerge on the forefront, and for the moment, seem to be “what’s happening” religiously. They remain decade after decade (in some cases century after century) and while the number of denominations grows as the population grows, the denominations persist in providing the stable substructure for religious expression.

This book adds some material to the first edition which in turn completely revised the earlier book entitled MPEG-2. It is an interesting reflection on the rate at which this technology progresses that these frequent revisions are necessary. Perhaps after H.264 one could say that all the key work has been done and thereafter progress will be incremental. H.264, also known as AVC, is, of course, the impetus for this edition. The opportunity has also been taken to incorporate some improved explanations.
