The political history of the modern State of Israel can be divided into two distinct periods: 1948 to 1967 and post-1967. These periods are distinguished both by the nature and interplay of the problems that the state faced, and by the characteristic functioning of the latter's democratic political structures in coping with those problems. This book deals with the first period, which I have termed the founding period. At one level, it seeks to provide an interpretative political history of that period as a whole: by focusing on the establishment and operation of new political structures; problems of statehood and social integration; relations among political parties; the aspirations and actions of political leaders; and the role of the electorate. These topics, portrayed in their contemporary context, are set against the background of the social, economic, and political structures inherited from the pre-state era.

This book is much more than a monograph about a scientific topic; it also provides a historical account of the growth of a new field of research by some of its pioneers. As such it is a case study of the long road from observations to phenomenological description culminating in true physical understanding typical for the geophysical sciences. It also illustrates the strong dependence on international collaboration, in this particular case the stimulus provided by the International Geophysical Year (IGY). This field of research grew out of ground-based whistler observations conducted during the IGY on the one hand and the first in situ measurements in the space environment surrounding the Earth made possible with the concurrent advent of the space age, on the other.

New York—Global stock exchanges were devastated this week by the worst collapse in history as a wave of panic selling followed the sun from Asia through Europe and back to Wall Street. The pandemonium was triggered by a Chinese government announcement that it would no longer finance the mounting budget and trade deficits of a “profligate United States” that “refuses to live within its means” and that “insists on scapegoating China for its own internal economic problems.” Nor would China continue to try to prop up “an increasingly worthless dollar.” As the Chinese began dumping U.S. assets on Wall Street, both stock and bond prices plummeted. The panic soon spread to other exchanges around the world as gold soared to more than $1,000 an ounce and fear of a global depression deepened. Conventional methods of synthesis of metal complexes as a rule involve use of metal salts or carbonyls. The final coordination or organometallic compounds are obtained as a result of a direct interaction of components (ligand and metal source), as well as by the exchange of ligands or metals, and using template synthesis. Meanwhile, the possibility of obtaining compounds directly from compact metals by the action of an electrical current was demonstrated at the end of the 19th century. Later it was reported that the synthesis of metal complexes from metals may be achieved in the gaseous phase (metals react in the form of atoms, ions or small particles), in solutions in the presence of oxidants or in donor-acceptor systems, and under surface friction conditions.

Supercritical fluid carbon dioxide (SF-C02) with its moderate critical constants, nonflammable nature and low cost provides an attractive alternative for replacing organic solvents traditionally used in chemical manufacturing processes. Minimizing liquid waste generation, easy separation of solutes and fast reaction rates are some of the advantages of the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) technology over conventional solvent extraction methods. The solvation strength of supercritical C02 can be tuned by changing the density of the fluid phase, thus selective extraction and dissolution of compounds may be achieved in SFE processes. Because C02 is not regulated by the US EPA as a volatile organic compound, C02-based SFE processes are environmentally acceptable. The CO2 used in SFE is produced by other industrial processes (e.g. fermentation processes), therefore the gas vented into the atmosphere from the SFE processes does not contribute to the "green house" effect.

The aim of this volume is to provide an introduction to Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD) for readers that are non-specialists in the field. In particular, we have in mind advanced undergraduates and graduate students — both theorists and experimentalists — who have a background in nuclear and/or particle physics. This leads to a very limited selection being made from the many topics that are covered by LQCD. The particular topics chosen have, in most cases, analogies in more conventional nuclear and particle physics — good examples being the chapters on the interquark potential and the interactions between hadrons, both of which can be compared with the nucleon-nucleon potential and the interactions between nucleon clusters.

Impurities play an important role in different spheres of our day-to-day life. For example, trace amounts of impurities present in crystalline solids have a profound influence on their mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical properties. Consequently, the performance of different types of devices based on these solids depends on the nature and concentration of impurities present in them. Trace amounts of impurities present in a growth medium also have a strong influence on the processes of nucleation of crystallizing phases of the same substance and the subsequent growth of the nucleated phase. Typical examples of such processes are: beneficial mineralization such as the formation of bone and tooth, and pathological mineralization such as formation of human kidney stones, scale formation in domestic appliances and industrial plants, and crystallization of saturated fatty acid methyl ester components of biodiesel during cold seasons, clogging fuel lines and filters of engines.

This work represents the essence of nearly 16 years of work in scientific computing for ocean and atmospheric modeling. This journey started at Alfred- Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, Germany, where – as a post graduate – I was assigned to optimize multi-grid solvers for elliptic partial differential equations evolving from ocean modeling.
