The study of the human brain, its capacities, and its diseases remains one of the greatest scientific and philosophical challenges ever undertaken. That said, compiling this report to consider aspects of what has been learned and is being learned about the brain that can be useful to the operations of the U.S. Army has also proven to be extremely challenging. First, the field of neuroscience is so dynamic that significant new findings are being announced almost daily. The ability to define the systems of neurons that are activated as a human learns, practices, and performs mental tasks has allowed impressive integration of the constantly accruing understanding of how neurons use their genes to create proteins that enable them to function together. The ability to correlate brain images with function and behavior has already translated into accelerated programs to develop yet more advanced imaging tools and techniques. |

In recent years, with the increase of nonlinear loads drawing nonsinusoidal currents, power quality distortion has become a serious problem in electrical power systems. Active filters have been known as an effective tool for harmonic mitigation as well as reactive power compensation, load balancing, voltage regulation, and voltage flicker compensation. On the other hand, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems provide uninterrupted, reliable, and high-quality power for vital loads. They, in fact, protect sensitive loads against power outages as well as overvoltage and undervoltage conditions. UPS systems also suppress line transients and harmonic disturbances. Applications of UPS systems include medical facilities, lifesupporting systems, data storage and computer systems, emergency equipment, telecommunications, industrial processing, and on-line management systems. Generally, an ideal UPS should be able to deliver uninterrupted power and, simultaneously, provide the necessary power conditioning for the particular power application. |

A huge amount of pig iron is made as the crude materials of high quality steel and a few hundred million ton of coal is used in the world every year. Although coal is mainly used as coke, extensive replacement of coke by injected pulverized coal is a major challenge for blast furnace operation to decrease the cost and reduce coke demand. According to theoretical investigations and actual industrial operation, it seems clear that coal combustion is hardly achieved in the raceway at high injection rate. Consequently unburned fine materials are blown with the gas into the bosh and dead man areas with possible detrimental effects on gas flow and permeability of the coke column. The capacity of the furnace to consume these particles by solution loss is probably one of the limitations to coal injection. It is therefore important to understand the physicochemical and aerodynamic behavior of fines including the change of in-furnace phenomena. |
