This book starts from the most elementary ideas of molecular orbital theory, and it leads the reader progressively towards an understanding of the electronic structure, of the molecular geometry and, in some cases, the reactivity of transition metal complexes. The use of simple notions, such as symmetry, overlap, and elec- tronegativity, allows a qualitative method of analysis of the electronic structure of complexes, and of the properties which follow from it such as geometry or reactivity, to be developed. Qualitative in the sense that, for example, it enables us to understand why the structure of a particular complex is tetrahedral rather than planar, without being able to provide a reliable numerical value of the energy difference between these two structures.

This book is on making digital location information available to software applications running on mobile devices. Mobile devices are connected to the Internet using various wireless link-layer techniques. Digital location information is the geographic location information which can take several different forms. Location-aware or location-based computing is making possible applications with the capability to sense their location and modify their settings, user interface, and functions accordingly.

Delay differential equations (DDEs) are important in many areas of engineering and science. The aim of this book is to bring together contributions from leading experts on the theory and applications of functional and DDEs. The editors have strived throughout to point out the interdisciplinary nature of these contributions. For example, advances in stability analysis, computational techniques (symbolic and numerical), and results from many otherwise disconnected fields (automotive engineering, manufacturing, neuroscience, and control theory) have been included in this book. The different contributions are not intended as a comprehensive survey of the many areas in which functional and DDEs have been useful, but rather, they are meant to help a reader bridge the gap between theoretical work and applications and extend the results and methods to other fields.

What is a “metamaterial”? In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the fabricated structures and composite materials that either mimic known material responses or qualitatively have new, physically realizable response functions that do not occur or may not be readily available in nature. The unconventional response functions of these metamaterials are often generated by artificially fabricated inclusions or inhomogeneities embedded in a host medium or connected to or embedded on a host surface. Exotic properties for such metamaterials have been predicted; many experiments have confirmed our basic understanding of many of them. The underlying interest in metamaterials is the potential to have the ability to engineer the electromagnetic and optical properties of materials for a variety of applications. The impact of metamaterials may be enormous: If one can tailor and manipulate the wave properties, significant decreases in the size and weight of components, devices, and systems along with enhancements in their performance appear to be realizable.

Both QED and the kinetic theory of plasmas are concerned with the interaction between charged particles and the electromagnetic field, but they are radically different in the way the interaction is described. The kinetic theory of plasmas is a collective-medium theory: a plasma is not a collection of independent particles in a given electromagnetic field, but a medium in which the particles collectively modify the field, and the field modifies the particles. The charge and current densities associated with the particles are part of a self-consistent field. Conventionally, the kinetic theory of plasmas is a classical theory: the motions of particles are treated using classical dynamics.

Sandwich panels are being extensively and increasingly used in single storey and multi-storey building construction because they are light in weight, energy effi- cient, aesthetically attractive and can be easily handled and erected. An author- itative book which considers all aspects of their design may, therefore, be considered to be overdue. This book has had a long period of gestation. The authors have all been closely involved in the evolution of the definitive documents for the design and application of sandwich panels within Europe and it was in the context of this committee work that the need for a comprehensive book, covering all of the important con- siderations which arise in the design, manufacture and use of sandwich panels, was first seen.

This collective volume brings together selected contributions to the symposium on “Mirror Neurons and the Evolution of Brain and Language”. Themeeting took place July 5–8, 2000, at the premises and with the financial support of the Hanse Institute for Advanced Study, Delmenhorst, Germany. The aim of the symposium was to discuss the status of the recent scientific discovery of the so called ‘mirror neurons’ and its potential consequences, more specifically from the point of view of our understanding of the evolution of brain, aspects of social intelligence (like imitation, behavioral and communicative role identification and theory of mind) and language from monkeys to primates to humans.

Criminology and criminal justice involve the scientific study of crime, criminals, and the criminal justice system. Interest in the problem of crime began centuries ago, and in the 18th century, after several European countries experienced social unrest, writings about crime began to appear. During the 19th century, social scientists studied social problems, including crime and responses to it. Interest in criminology in the United States began in the late 19th century and flourished in the 20th century. Initially there were two major areas in the study of criminology: theoretical and applied criminology. Theoretical criminology included the etiology of crime, theories of criminality, typologies of crime and criminals, and the extent of crime. Applied criminology included the study of justice agencies and processes, often referred to as criminal justice, as well as the law. Today, the terms criminology and criminal justice are often used interchangeably, and the dichotomy between the two is less clear. For example, some of the subject matter in many criminology and criminal justice textbooks often overlaps although the original foci of each remain.

Nanoscience and technology has emerged as a frontier area of research today. A great deal of stimulating progress is being made in the world of nanoscience every other day. Research in “Nanochemistry,” chemistry of nanomaterials, has resulted in the developments of newer methods of synthesis of materials with desired structure, composition, and properties of nanomaterials and their related applications. With this rich array of knowledge available, the question arises as to how does a student, a researcher, or materials scientist get an actual feel of nanopowders and get down to the science and art of making them? Chemistry deals with the synthesis and analysis both being complementary are equally important. Prof KC Patil with his training in Inorganic Synthesis and Propellant Chemistry has found a novel and simple method of tailormaking oxide materials. Prof Patil’s method is distinctly different from the other known methods. I am particularly impressed by the simplicity of the process and the choice of the reactants to prepare a variety of oxide materials from alumina to zirconia and their composites.

In image processing one is often interested Not only in analyzing one image but in comparing or combining the information given by different images. For this reason, image registration is one of the fundamental tasks within image processing. The task of image registration is to find an optimal geometric transformation between corresponding image data. In practice, the concrete type of the geometric transformation as well as the Notions of optimal and corresponding depend on the specific application. Image registration is a problem often encountered in many application areas like, for example, astro- and geophysics, computer vision, and medicine. For an overview, see, e.g., Brown (1992), Maintz & Viergever (1998), Maurer & Fitzpatrick (1993), van den Elsen et al (1993), and references therein.
