Application of polymers from renewable resources - also identified as biopolymers - has a large potential market due to the current emphasis on sustainable technology. For optimal R&D achievements and hence benefits from these market opportunities, it is essential to combine the expertise available in the vast range of different disciplines in biopolymer science and technology. The International Centre of Biopolymer Technology - ICBT - has been created with support from the European Commission to facilitate cooperation and the exchange of scientific knowledge between industries, universities and other research groups. One of the activities to reach these objectives, is the organisation of a conference on Biopolymer Technology.

The first edition of this book appeared over fifteen years ago. It was the first chemical engineering textbook to combine modeling, simulation, and control. It also was the first chemical engineering book to present sampled-data control. This choice of subjects proved to be popular with both students and teachers and of considerable practical utility. During the ten-year period following publication, I resisted suggestions from the publisher to produce a second edition because I felt there were really very few useful new developments in the field. The control hardware had changed drastically, but the basic concepts and strategies of process control had undergone little change. Most of the new books that have appeared during the last fifteen years are very similar in their scope and content to the first edition. Basic classical control is still the major subject.

As noted by the author in the previous editions, this book examines commercial banking in the framework of the U.S. financial services industry. This industry is currently in a state of dynamic change that is rapidly transforming the role of commercial banks and the entire financial system. The 1990s are a period of dramatic transition for the commercial banking industry, one in which the nature of the banking industry is changing more rapidly than at any other time in its history. The combined forces of deregulation, electronic data processing, and telecommunications are altering both the nature of commercial banks and the competitive environment within which they operate. These forces have broken down the traditional barriers that both restricted the activities in which banks could engage and protected their position within the prescribed areas of activity. As a result, banks can now offer a wide array of services and pay competitive rates of interest; at the same time, they now compete directly with a variety of other financial and nonfinancial institutions for savings and loan customers.

The evolving paradigm, suggesting the existence of an intricate link connecting inflammatory processes with oncogenesis, finds its roots all the way back into the nineteenth century. Rudolf Virchow, one of the most prominent German physicians of his time, was the first to uncover almost 150 years ago the presence of white blood cells in tumor specimens. This observation led Virchow to suggest – largely intuitively – that carcinogenesis could occur at sites of chronic inflammation, and that a set of secreted factors produced by inflamed tissues supports neoplastic growth while helping the tumor to escape the immune system surveillance by inducing a state of so-called immunosuppression concurrently inhibiting natural elimination of malignant cells via the process currently known as apoptosis.

Why do we need this book? There are tons of books on criminal investigation on the market, but the same is not true regarding the investigation of computer- related crimes. When we wrote this book, the latest one covering computer crime was 7 to 10 years old. Technology changes very fast. The software and hardware used by investigators may work one day and may not work the next, as the next generation of software and hardware comes into use. What is important are the principles of investigating computers and other electronic evidence. Computer-related crime is defined as “any criminal activity that involves use of computer technology, directly or indirectly, as the instrumentality or object of the commission of a criminal act.” Most of us think of “hacking” when we think of a computer crime, where some genius child plays war games with the Pentagon’s computer system. The truth is that computers are used by ordinary people of average intelligence to commit virtually every traditional crime in the penal code.

While the estate agent may chant ‘location, location, location!’, and the stock exchange trader shout ‘‘Buy, sell, buy!’’, the editor of a book devoted to hair has to engage in a little bit of buying, selling and unmasking of the hair follicle as the dream location for unrivalled access to myriad processes underlying much of modern and ancient human life and lifestyle. This book, entitled Hair in Toxicology – An Important Bio-Monitor, is part of a new book series Issues in Toxicology from The Royal Society of Chemistry. It is the first book of this kind to be devoted exclusively to the hair follicle and its shaft as an important tool in modern toxicology. This multi-author book will serve as both a reference and a guide to investigations in the biomedical, biochemical and pharmaceutical sciences. Written by investigators from the fields of chemistry, biochemistry and biology, the authors have first-hand knowledge from their chosen sub-specialities and are active contributors to the peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Correct and efficient measurements are vital to the understanding of materials properties and applications. This is especially so for magnetic materials for which in last twenty years, our understanding and use have changed dramatically. New or improved materials have been created and have reached the market. The Soft amorphous alloys, the Fe-based rare-earth magnets and the giant magnetorestrictive and magnetoresistive materials have all posed challenges to measurement. At the same time new digital measurement techniques have forced a change in laboratory and commercial measuring setups. A revision of measuring standards also occurred in the 1990s with the result that there is now a lack of up-to-date works on the measurement of magnetic materials.

If you knew in 1998 what you know now, what would your company have done differently? No doubt the answers run from limiting debt financing, to paying a lot more attention to cash generation, to much more focus on bottom- rather than top-line results. But no one would say, "I wouldn't change a thing." The early Greeks and Romans didn't worry about uncertainty. Though they had the mathematical skills to have conceived and developed ways of analyzing probabilities, it didn't occur to them to try. The very idea of uncertainty would have been foreign. They believed that everything was predestined. It wasn't until the Middle Ages that the idea of probability arose and rigorous attempts at analysis occurred. Within a couple of centuries the pendulum had swung so far that many believed every system could be precisely analyzed in probability terms. Humanity had thus developed the concept of "uncertainty," and began applying its skills to sorting the odds.

I’ve been fascinated by digital imaging and printing ever since I bought my first desktop inkjet printer a few years ago. I had heard about this new way of creating images, and I wanted to try it so I could send prints to my family and share them with my colleagues and friends. While pleased with my initial success, I knew there was more to learn about digital printing, and I quickly discovered that I was not alone in needing help and guidance. There are countless imagemakers out there who are looking for the answers to some of the same questions I had. They want to know how to create, print, and share their images by using the new digital technologies that are changing our lives. If you’re one of those people, you’ve come to the right place!

The massive accumulation of coal fly ash generated by electric power plants during fossil fuel combustion has become a major environmental health concern in the United States. Even though, stringent environmental regulations have been mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, coal combustion products continue to pose serious environmental concerns due to our major reliance upon fossil fuels to meet ever increasing demands for energy production within the United States. The concentrations of trace elements in coal residues are extremely variable and depend upon the composition of the original coal, conditions experienced during combustion, the efficiency of emission control devices, storage and handling procedures, and overall climatic conditions.
