Communication is both a complex matter and a universal phenomenon. A sender, a receiver, and the information to be transferred form the essential elements. Communication takes place between humans, between animals, and between plants, but also between humans and animals, as well as between animals and plants. The information to be transformed takes many forms — visual, acoustic, olfactory, and tactile. In science, communication takes place as a rule in rather condensed forms, often visual as a written text; information may even be still more condensed as in a mathematical formula, in bar codes, or in digitized images. In theory, communication in the sciences should be precise and unequivocal, but in real life many ambiguities exist, some of them by coincidence and some deliberately introduced and the source of much confusion. A large number of dictionaries have been published to try to clarify scientific terminology and to ease communication.

The papers in this book are the majority of those that were presented at the Sixth International Symposium of Poisonous Plants (ISOPP6) held in Glasgow, Scotland, August 2001. The papers have been subjected to refereeing and editing. The editors are grateful to the referees and to the authors, who responded in a timely manner in the format requested. Although the refereeing process has delayed publication we hope that the changes made will help make the volume accessible to the more general reader. Due to limitations of space, some submissions have been shortened considerably. We hope that the resulting loss of content does not detract from the authors' intended message. Where animal studies were conducted, authors are responsible for meeting the ethical and legal requirements of their institutes and countries. A number have made explicit statements in this regard.

This book covers the results of the Teraflop Workbench, other projects related to High Performance Computing, and the usage of HPC installations at HLRS. The TeraflopWorkbench project is a collaboration between the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) and NEC Deutschland GmbH (NEC-HPCE) to support users in achieving their research goals using High Performance Computing. The first stage of the Teraflop Workbench project (2004–2008) concentrated on user’s applications and their optimization for the former flag ship of HLRS, a 72- node NEC SX-8 installation. During this stage, numerous individual codes, developed and maintained by researchers or commercial organizations, have been analyzedand optimized.Within the project, several of the codes have shown the ability to outreach the TFlop/s threshold of sustained performance. This created the possibility for new science and a deeper understanding of the underlying physics.

We are living in the middle of an information revolution that is changing all our lives. This revolution is more fundamental than the agricultural and industrial revolutions. The ability to sit in our homes and go shopping anywhere in the world, to browse the range of offerings, and to have items delivered to us is becoming commonplace. But this revolution also deals with information about ourselves, how we differ from others in minute detail, and how the cells that constitute our bodies are able to process the information that enables us to live our lives. This book represents a fragment of the biological information revolution as we struggle to gather the large number of facts that are required as a prerequisite to understanding life. We are not too far away from this understanding for simple life forms, perhaps ten years will suffice. It is fascinating to be living during this period. The authors of the various chapters have attempted to make some of the methodology accessible so that the techniques may be applied by others to enhance our knowledge.

During the past two centuries, the impact of technology on society has been more fundamental and far-reaching than any visionary, philosopher or sciencefiction author of the past could have ever imagined. The world as a whole and all its societies have been changing through the processes of developing, adapting and implementing very different kinds of technology. Particularly those enterprises engaged in transportation across national borders are highly complex systems in terms of specific dynamic interrelations between people, the organizations they work in, and the technology they work with. Furthermore they are embedded in very specific ways into these different societies which are taking advantage of transportation. Such enterprises are complex socio-technical systems. They need to continuously develop and redesign themselves in order to meet all the requirements of their tasks, under ever changing conditions. Introducing new transportation technology and new software tools into this market means instigating such fundamental change processes. These change processes are in themselves highly complex and need to be dealt with in a very conscious and multi-facetted approach.

The capital and installation costs of building services in modern buildings can take up 50% of the total construction budget. For highly serviced buildings such as sports centres, this figure can easily exceed 75%. Services can also take up 15% of a building's volume. Therefore building services cannot be ignored. Architects have learnt to accept and accommodate the increased need for pipes, ducts and cabling encroaching on to their designs. Some with reluctance, not least Louis Kahn when writing in World Architecture in 1964: 'I do not like ducts. I do not like pipes. I hate them so thoroughly, I feel that they have to be given their place. If I just haled them and took no care, I think they would invade the building and completely destroy it.' Not all architects have chosen to compete with the ducting and mechanical plant. Some have followed the examples of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers by integrating it with the construction and making it a feature of the building, viz. the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Lloyds Building in London.

Probably the most disturbing concept in Christian tradition is the prospect that one day vast numbers of people will be consigned to hell. Almost everyone has friends or family members—people we dearly love—who are outside the faith and who, if they die in this condition, will be cast away from the presence of God. So disturbing is the idea of hell that most pastors and church members simply ignore the doctrine of final retribution, preferring to talk in vague terms about a separation of the wicked from the righteous. But what is hell? A literal place of flame and smoke? A banishment from God? Annihilation? Is there such a place as purgatory where people are readied for the presence of God? In this book four professors describe in nontechnical language what they think the final judgment will be like, and then at the end of each chapter, they evaluate the opinions of their colleagues.

Drought is an insidious natural hazard that results from a deficiency of precipitation from expected or “normal” that, when extended over a season or longer, is insufficient to meet the demands of human activities and the environment. Drought by itself is not a disaster. Whether it becomes a disaster depends on its impact on local people and the environment. Therefore, the key to understanding drought is to understand both its natural and social dimensions.

In 2005, The UK’s RNLI lifeboats were launched 8421 times for all causes. Of these, 1710 launches were to vessels suffering machinery failure, 1298 being to leisure craft (387 of these were sailing vessels and 911 were power craft). These numbers don’t include failures dealt with by professional breakdown services or friendly tows. Some knowledge of the operation of diesel engines and their systems, their maintenance and the ability to carry out simple repairs would have reduced the need for the rescue services to attend these craft signifi cantly.

An international meeting of defense ministries and department representatives from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States was held in Edinburgh, Australia, on February 23–25, 2004, under the auspices of The Technical Cooperation Program (TTCP). At this meeting, the Conventional Weapons Group (WPN) Technical Panel 4 (TP-4) for Energetic Materials and Propulsion agreed that a project “Development of Environmental Threshold Values for Defense Sites Contaminated with Energetic Materials” be conducted to promote the data acquisition and sharing of ecotoxicological information to address environmental problems related to energetic materials (EMs). The first objective of this international collaboration involved the development of environmental threshold concentrations for explosives and propellants. These criteria were needed for the ecological risk assessment (ERA) of sites contaminated with EMs, that is, to know “how clean is clean.” Although the choice of approach and the use of ERA tools may differ from country to country, the assurance of quality and direction of ecotoxicological research were recognized as key concerns shared by the scientific community.
