The theory of automorphic forms is formulated in terms of reductive algebraic groups. This is sometimes a serious obstacle for mathematicians whose background does not include Lie groups and Lie algebras. The monograph is by no means intended to exclude such mathematicians, even though the theory of reductive groups was an informal prerequisite for the Summer School. Some modest familiarity with the language of algebraic groups is often sufficient, at least to get started. For this reason, we have generally resisted the temptation to work with specific matrix groups. The short article of Murnaghan contains a summary of some of the basic properties of reductive algebraic groups that are used elsewhere in the monograph. |

The importance of specific antibodies for the clearance of and long-term resistance to many infectious pathogens has long been appreciated. Moreover, the role in these processes of the different antibody heavy chain isotypes, each tailored to induce diverse effector pathways such as those mediated by complement and Fc receptors and to promote antibody localization in distinct regions of the body, is well established. Insights into the molecular mechanism of isotype class switching showed that during an immune response B cells could change the heavy chain of the antibody they produced, without influencing the structure and specificity of the antigen-binding variable regions of this antibody (Honjo 1983). More recently, the germinal center pathway of B cell development was elucidated, in which antibody variable regions undergo extensive structural alteration via hypermutation followed by stringent phenotypic selection (Berek 1992; Kelsoe 1995). Emerging from this pathway are memory B cells and long-lived antibody-forming cells that express antigen receptors and secrete antibodies, respectively, with increased affinity and specificity for the foreign antigen. |

Tetanus is a frequently fatal disease caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. The disease is characterized by intense, painful muscle contractions, sometimes strong enough to break even the strongest bones in the body. Reflecting the symptoms of the disease, the word tetanus is derived from the Greek term tetanos, meaning “to contract.” Historically, tetanus had a high mortality rate. With the limited medical treatment available in the 1940s in the United States, for example, the death rate for tetanus was estimated to be over 90 percent.2 Even with intensive medical treatment, the death rate is still 5 to 10 percent. |

The new digital radio system DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting), developed within the Eureka 147 project in close cooperation with the EBU, is a very innovative and universal multimedia broadcast system that is just being introduced, and which has the potential to replace existing AM and FM audio broadcast services in many parts of the world in the near future. In several countries in Europe and overseas, broadcasting organisations, network providers and receiver manufacturers are already implementing digital broadcasting services using the DAB system. DAB is very different from conventional analogue broadcasting systems. Most of the system components such as perceptual audio coding (MPEG-1/2), OFDM channel coding and modulation, the provision of a multiplex of several services and data transmission protocols (MOT), are new concepts typical of digital broadcasting. Even experts in analogue transmission systems will feel less familiar with these new elements of broadcasting technology. Therefore, the aim of this book is to inform the expert reader about the basic concepts of the DAB system. |
