Supersymmetry (SUSY) offers the possibility of solving a number of theoretical problems of the Standard Model (SM). Thus the cancelations implied by the bose-fermi symmetry resolves the gauge hierarchy problem, allowing one to consider models at energies all the way up to the GUT or Planck scale. Further, using the SUSY SM particle spectrum with one pair of Higgs doublets. (pairs of Higgs doublets are needed on theoretical grounds to cancel anomalies and on phenomenological grounds to give rise to both u and d quark masses) the renormalization group equations (RGE) show that grand unification of the SM gauge coupling constants occurs at MG 21 10l6 GeV opening up the possibility of SUSY GUT models.

Examining the treatment in meteorological works of thermodynamical problems involving the ideas of surface tension and of adsorption, one is struck by the fact that such questions are almost always dealt with in a fragmentary manner. The reader is referred to various works which he is recommended to study in order to understand the statements presented. The multiplicity of sources on which it is desirable to draw leads him to feel the need for a general treatment, and to wish for a single account uniting in a coherent manner the variousproblems of a similar nature involving the thermodynamics of capillarity. Only an account of this kind enables one to get to the root of problems, to perceive what physical hypotheses are required in the process, and to judge the consistency or inconsistency of various theories.

Inorganic oxysalts represent one of the most important and widespread groups of inorganic compounds. The idea behind this book originated at a meeting held in Caramulo in Portugal in September 2003. The participants agreed that, though the field of natural dynamos (planetary, stellar and galactic) was rapidly evolving and attracting the interest of researchers in other branches of fluid mechanics, there was no comprehensive introductory book for researchers or graduate students entering this research area. The organisers therefore decided to take advantage of the broad-based knowledge of the invited lecturers at the conference to assemble a “multi-authored monograph”. Despite the obvious contradiction in this phrase, it does reflect the spirit in which this book was prepared. While each section of the book was written by specialists in different aspects of this subject, a concerted effort has been made to provide a unified presentation, which develops concepts in a coherent order and, where feasible, uses consistent notation.

The preparation of this second edition is motivated by the effectiveness of the first edition in classroom instruction, so the original structure and content have been retained. Our changes have been directed to the needs of students and other readers. Most obviously, we have moved the review of mathematics, formerly an appendix, to the front of the book (and, by labeling it Chapter 0, have conveniently preserved the structure and numbering throughout the following body of the text). As geochronology has progressed in the last 20 years, the Archean has continued to attract interest. Advancements in our understanding of Archean crustal and mantle evolution can be traced through a series of meetings and published papers beginning in 1970 with the first International Archean Symposium in Perth in Western Australia (Glover, 1970). Among the exciting problems at that meeting were the relationship between low and high grade Archean terrains, the origin of Archean ultramafic rocks and, in particular, the recently discovered komatiites in South Africa, and the origin of various Archean mineral deposits. Only about 30% of the papers dealt with geochronology and Archean crustal evolution.

Practical ethics covers a wide area. We can find ethical ramifications in most of our choices, if we look hard enough. This book does not attempt to cover this whole area. The problems it deals with have been selected on two grounds: their relevance, and the extent to which philosophical reasoning can contribute to a discussion of them. I regard an ethical issue as relevant if it is one that any thinking person must face. Some of the issues discussed in this book confront us daily: what are our personal responsibilities towards the poor? Are we justified in treating animals as nothing more than machines producing flesh for us to eat? Should we be using paper that is not recycled? And why should we bother about acting in accordance with moral principles anyway? Other problems, like abortion and euthanasia, fortunately are not everyday decisions for most of us; but they are issues that can arise at some time in our lives. They are also issues of current concern about which any active participant in our society's decision-making process needs to reflect. The extent to which an issue can usefully be discussed philosophically depends on the kind of issue it is. Some issues are controversial largely because there are facts in dispute. For example, whether the release of new organisms created by the use of recombinant DNA ought to be permitted seems to hang largely on whether the organisms pose a serious risk to the environment.
