Electrical energy is one of the main elements for the economical development of society. The just aspirations of modern societies to economical growth have forced us to secure more continual energy resources. On the other hand, climate change and international treaties aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have prompted all of us to be increasingly concerned about energy efficiency and conservation. With the rapid growth of the information-based economy, widespread expansion of electronic devices has become a prevalent phenomenon in both the public and private sectors. Their suitability to perform various functions such as storage, management, processing and exchange of digital data and information, are essential support for information and communication technology (ICT). Although the consumption of energy may increase, influenced by the increase in the necessary communications infrastructure, the use of renewable energy may contribute to a more rational consumption of energy, reducing the impact on the environment.

From the 1990s onwards, globalisation became the key concept, both in academic debate and in mainstream political discourse. In the Western world, it came to be closely associated with the Third- Way political project, which proposed a radical centre ground that transcended statist socialism (in its Stalinist and social-democratic forms) and neo-liberal market fundamentalism. Globalisation was a term commonly used by Bill Clinton and Tony Blair in particular, and, in Britain at least, academic debate and political project embraced, through the work of Anthony Giddens. In the advanced capitalist countries, the idea of a new economy was championed, in which the old boombust cycles of industrial capitalism were replaced by ongoing economic growth boosted by the information-led, ‘new economy’. At the same time, it was claimed that the developing world could get in on the act too, through the adoption of liberal policies that would attract investment, boost trade, and promote long-term growth.

Although the research presented in this thesis is performed in the inorganic chemistry and catalysis group at the Eindhoven University of Technology, this thesis does not contain any chemical (catalytic) reactions. Instead, it deals with a subject of physical chemistry, the diffusion of molecules in zeolites. At first sight, these two subjects do not seem to be too closely related. Diffusion can however be a very important parameter when understanding the catalytic performance of chemical reactors, something which will hopefully become clear in the next few sections.

The need to protect groundwater in a concerted way at European Union (EU) level has been highlighted for more than two decades. For a long time, groundwater protection regimes and associated policies have suffered from a lack of overall planning and speci; c instruments which could ensure concerted actions across the EU. Early groundwater legislation (Directive 80/68/EEC) rather narrowly focused on control of emissions of substances from industrial and urban sources, while provisions for control of diffuse sources came later in the legislative picture with the agriculture- and industrial emissions-related directives, and in particular with the Nitrates (96/676/EC) and IPPC (61/96/EC) Directives.

Many good books are available which provide a rigorous and comprehensive treatment of electric motors. These serve the needs of academia, and are fine for both would-be and accomplished specialists. There are, however, numerous technologists and practitioners of the applied sciences who may not readily derive benefit from such treatises; for instance, engineers, electronics designers, intelligent hobbyists and experimenters. Although such people generally possess more-than-adequate technical backgrounds, they often feel ill at ease when working with electric motors. Included in their company are electrical engineers for the simple reason that their training probably focused more on software, programming and computer logic than on rotating machinery.

Collagen type I is the most abundant protein in mammals. It has outstanding mechanical properties and is present in virtually every extracellular tissue with mechanical function. In tendons and ligaments, collagen transmits the force from muscles to bones and stores elastic energy. Smooth walking would not be possible without these properties. Collagen also represents most of the organic matrix of bones and tooth dentin and confers them their fracture resistance. It is a major constituent of skin and blood vessels and is even present in muscles, which could not function without a collagen-rich matrix around the contractile cells. A slightly different type of collagen (type II) is a critical component of a tissue as soft as articular cartilage. The function of collagen is not only mechanical. In the cornea of the eye, for example, the ordering of collagen fibrils confers transparency in addition to mechanical stability.
