Ignimbrites are vast, landscape-modifying deposits composed mainly of pumice fragments and ash. They derive from the most hazardous types of explosive volcanic eruptions and record rapid sedimentation from catastrophic pyroclastic density currents that sweep across the ground. Since early work on ignimbrites by P. Marshall (1935), H. Kuno (1941), R. L. Smith (1960) and R. V. Fisher (1966), there has been a dramatic increase in research into these enigmatic deposits. Particularly instructive field studies include those of ignimbrites from the large caldera volcanoes of the western USA, from the arc volcanoes of the Mediterranean region, Japan, Southeast Asia, South America and New Zealand, and from intraplate volcanoes such as the Canary Islands. Experimental-analogue and numerical modelling of pyroclastic density current behaviour and sedimentation have recently complemented the field-based work. Now there is a bewildering plethora of ignimbrite classification schemes, emplacement models and deposit interpretations. It is therefore timely to take stock, to synthesize modern understanding, and, in particular, to consider how field investigations of ignimbrite lithofacies can best be used both to infer actual pyroclastic density current behaviour and to constrain or test the various models. A fresh look at ignimbrite _ emplacement is all the more important with the recognition that ignimbrites can relate to eruptions with magnitudes sufficient to impact global climate and biota. |

Djebbar Tiab is the Senior Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Oklahoma, and Petroleum Engineering consultant. He received his B.Sc. (May 1974) and M.Sc. (May 1975) degrees from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and his Ph.D. degree (July 1976) from the University of Oklahoma-all in petroleum engineering. He is the Director of the University of Oklahoma Graduate Program in Petroleum Engineering in Algeria. At the University of Oklahoma, he taught fifteen different petroleum and general engineering courses including: well test analysis, petrophysics, oil reservoir engineering, natural gas engineering, and properties of reservoir fluids. Dr. Tiab has consulted for a number of oil companies and offered training programs in petroleum engineering in the USA and overseas. He worked for over two years in the oilfields of Algeria for Alcore, S.A., an association of Sonatrach and Core Laboratories. He has also worked and consulted for Core Laboratories and Western Atlas in Houston, Texas, for four years as a Senior Reservoir Engineer Advisor. |

Molecular Endocrinology and Regulation is a burgeoning field, having experienced a remarkable period of growth since the late 1960s. At that time, there was no field of Hormone Action. The prevailing view of how hormones worked ranged from effects on membrane transport of nutrients and precursors for RNA and protein synthesis, to effects on the translation of mRNA at the level of ribosomes. There was, however, a small cadre of voices that predicted a possible nuclear action on mRNA synthesis. The first such paper was presented at the national endocrine meetings in 1967 and dealt with hormonal stimulation of oviductal protein synthesis. It was about this time that a small group of scientists interested in hormone effects in cells attended a Gordon Conference in New Hampshire organized by Jim Florini; this meeting represented one of the first conferences to focus an entire program on hormone action and mechanisms. |

The most important applied structure is called Fundamental (Technical) Plans (FP). The plans can indeed also reach beyond pure technique, such as organization. The main author has worked within this area as a consultant and as a teacher for many years, starting in the 1970s. The students have represented operators from all over the world. Historically, after a long stable period during the twentieth century, digitization brought the need for a synchronization plan in addition to a basic set of plans. The area of IN and mobility were the next challenges to the basic ‘FP house design’. A main contribution was a mobility management plan. Then IP entered the overall telecom area, giving a new touch to the quality of service plan, urging for a separate security plan and for a controllable convergence. The FP view supports no doubt an orderly convergence between technologies. After all, all technologies have a common target: to connect communicating parties in a satisfactory way, technically and economically. |

You may ask why I wrote this book. There are many, many personal reasons as with any author I suppose. The first two reasons and probably the most important are my love of flying and my love of radio engineering. This may sound rather dull but I love flying in any machine be it balloon, glider, propeller aircraft, microlight through to airline jets and the experience of it. The more I do it the more I feel I understand it. A relative once asked me, ‘how does an aircraft fly?’ I thought for a while, of how to try and explain the fundamentals of physics and aerodynamics which I feel privileged to have had a fundamental education in. After further thought I realized how I take it all for granted like the vast majority of the people, and despite this education and the sound engineering principles, I still find that flying defies all our instinct and it truly is difficult to explain. I also find the whole topic of radio propagation equally magical. Again, how can it work when we cannot see it? How can signals travel through apparent nothingness. How can we predict it? The physical equations are all there to describe it in great detail, however it too defies a layman’s logic. |
