Aging has long since been ascribed to the gradual accumulation of DNA mutations in the genome of somatic cells. However, it is only recently that the necessary sophisticated technology has been developed to begin testing this theory and its consequences. Vijg critically reviews the concept of genomic instability as a possible universal cause of aging in the context of a new, holistic understanding of genome functioning in complex organisms resulting from recent advances in functional genomics and systems biology. It provides an up-to-date synthesis of current research, as well as a look ahead to the design of strategies to retard or reverse the deleterious effects of aging. This is particularly important in a time when we are urgently trying to unravel the genetic component of aging-related diseases. Moreover, there is a growing public recognition of the imperative of understanding more about the underlying biology of aging, driven by continuing demographic change.

This volume is the second edition of Adventures in Celestial Mechanics published by Victor G. Szebehely in 1989 at the University of Texas Press. The subject of this edition is the same as the previous one which was to quote the earlier introduction “to study the motion of natural and artificial bodies in space.” The work is still intended as a textbook for a first course in orbital mechanics and spacecraft dynamics and we have attempted to produce a second edition that maintains the spirit of the first. This was also stated succinctly in the introduction of the first edition: “fundamental ideas will be emphasized and will not be cluttered up with details that are available in the immense literature of this field.”

Several recent developments in materials science have indicated that there is currently strong worldwide interest in using shape memory polymers in different fields, such as textiles, medical applications and vehicle manufacture. There have been significant developments in shape memory technology over the past few years and a number of achievements have been reported. It is not the scope of the book to cover adequately in one volume all aspects of shape memory polymer chemistry and technology in different fields. A systematic review is given of the use of shape memory polymers and their technology, mainly in textiles. Most of the original data presented here are essentially from the Shape Memory Textile Center in the Institute of Textiles and Clothing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In addition, this book is intended to provide a thorough understanding of the concepts and principles of using shape memory polymers in textiles, in terms of its structure, synthesis, and underlying thermoresponsive behaviour. The book also covers the unique features characterizing the shape memory polymers found by different thermal and optical measurements.

Capillary Forces in Microassembly discusses the use of capillary forces as a gripping principle in microscale assembly. Clearly written and well-organized, this text brings together physical concepts at the microscale with practical applications in micromanipulation. Throughout this work, the reader will find a review of the existing gripping principles, elements to model capillary forces as well as descriptions of the simulation and experimental test bench developed to study the design parameters. Using well-known concepts from surface science (such as surface tension, capillary effects, wettability, and contact angles) as inputs to mechanical models, the amount of effort required to handle micro-components is predicted. These developments are then applied in a case study concerning the pick and place of balls in a watch ball bearing.

At the instigation of the Iron and Steel Federation, the late Bernard Godfrey began work in 1952 on the first edition of the Steel Designers’ Manual. As principal author he worked on the manuscript almost continuously for a period of two years. On many Friday evenings he would meet with his co-authors, Charles Gray, Lewis Kent and W.E. Mitchell to review progress and resolve outstanding technical problems. A remarkable book emerged.Within approximately 900 pages it was possible for the steel designer to find everything necessary to carry out the detailed design of most conventional steelwork. Although not intended as an analytical treatise, the book contained the best summary of methods of analysis then available.

My grandfather always said there are three types of businesspeople. The first type makes mistakes and doesn’t learn from them. These people make the same mistakes again. The second type of businessperson makes mistakes and learns from them. They don’t make those mistakes again. The third type of businessperson learns from the mistakes of others so they never make those mistakes themselves. Of course, they do make some. But by learning from the mistakes of others, they save themselves time, headaches, and money. The Ugly Truth about Small Business: 50 Things That Can Go Wrong and What You Can Do about It will help you be the third type of businessperson.

In October 1973, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) decided unilaterally to end the oil corporations’ monopoly over crude oil prices and production levels, and immediately set a price considerably in excess of the prevailing norm. In the same month, a war broke out between Israel and the neighbouring Arab states: in order to support the Arab cause, a number of leading Arab oil producers announced a selective boycott of oil supplies, coupled with a progressive cut in production levels. In the aftermath of these two separate decisions, oil prices soared, the traditional role of companies within the international oil industry changed, and the incomes of the major oilexporting states increased severalfold. The petrodollar became an important element in the world economy, and Western companies competed for the contracts available for the rapid further development and modernization of the newly affluent oil states. Meanwhile, the vast rise in the price of oil caused further problems for the economies of the industrialized world, already suffering from inflation. Even when the real price of oil began to decline later in the 1970s, the power over pricing and production decisions still remained with the producer governments rather than the oil companies. In 1979 the Iranian Revolution triggered a worldwide panic about oil supplies that again pushed up prices severalfold and dealt a further blow to the developed economies.

Biomedical Research Reports is introduced at a time of unprecedented advances and public interest in medical research. Our intention is to provide the reader with an in-depth analysis of subjects of interest to the biomedical researcher from the broad perspective of multiple authors, each covering a particular facet of the subject. We intentionally have chosen a broad scope for this new series to maximize flexibility in the range of topics that will be reviewed. We will select, annually at a minimum, subjects that we believe are both timely and challenging. It is particularly appropriate to launch the series with the topic of "Emerging Infections." We are indeed fortunate that Richard M. Krause, M.D., a long-time student and authority on the subject, has agreed to edit our first volume. Dr. Krause has highlighted the leading emerging infectious diseases of this century, and in his characteristically eloquent style has packaged them into an easy to read volume. The introductory chapter by Dr. Krause, and the chapters by Roy M. Anderson, "Analytical Theory of Epidemics," and Julian E. Davies and Vera Webb, "Antibiotic Resistance in Bacteria," provide a background for understanding some of the principles of emerging infectious diseases. Influenza, dengue, AIDS, Hantavirus, Ebola virus, streptococcal diseases, Lyme disease, tuberculosis, cholerae, malaria, parasitic infections and slow virus infections were selected by Dr. Krause as examples of infectious diseases that pose enormous scientific and clinical challenges.

Whom is this book intended for? It is for those new to the use and abuse of centrifugal pumps. It is also for those whose involvement with pumps is so occasional, that they need a reminder of the basics. I hope its content can help avoid just some of the problems I have seen or been involved with over the years. Modern centrifugal pumps are not complex machines. Usually they consist of a few castings, mouldings, or pressings that are pierced by a few wrought or turned components. Evidently, they are one of the ubiquitous machines, being comparable in numbers to the electric motor and the internal combustion engine.

The twentieth century might fairly be called the Bolshevik century. From the moment of the Soviet Union’s emergence after the October Revolution, the presence of this new historical actor on the world stage affected every important event. Its birth changed the fortunes of World War I. The Allied victory in World War II owed much to the prodigious human and material capacities the Soviets were able to mobilize— despite the prior loss of many millions and vast resources from the purges, gulags, collectivization, and man-made famines of the 1930s.1 So successful was the wartime effort that Stalin was able to bring into the Soviet sphere a number of other countries in Eastern Europe at the war’s end. The presence of the Soviet Union in the world shaped not only international but internal politics everywhere, from Western European social-welfare policies to the many Third-World struggles that advanced under Soviet aegis.
